I’m trying to be patient, I’m wondering how long your meds took to work? How did you know that they were working? Thanks!
It depends.
Usually between 2 and 4 weeks for me.
But it may also happen that they never work as intended. It’s kind of a lottery with these antipsychotics. Consider yourself lucky if you find the right one on your first try.
What are your current symptoms?
Not feeling connected to reality, agitation, constant negative noise in my head
How do you know they’re working?
In my case I was hearing voices and I had severe paranoia and delusions. I thought I was living in the matrix. So after a while the voices disappeared and I gradually understood that I was actually ill. That’s when they lowered the dose. Fyi they usually start with a high dose for greater impact. It causes sedation (sleepiness) but sometimes it can also give you muscle restlessness (akathisia).
@Andrey Did you feel disconnected from reality? I hate that one
it took a few months for most of my voices to go away and my moods to stabilize, then i got anhedonia and was depressed for 16 months, but stuck with my meds and i started to feel better and lost the weight i put on in my first year and a half. i still hear voices but it’s usually just before i go to bed and they are quieter now and don’t distress me much. it’s not perfectt but i will be on meds for life. i take invega trinza.
Yes I did feel disconnected for a while…
4 years lol .
I tried more than 10 APs.
It took about 2 years to get all my meds right and up to the levels they needed to be to get me up and around and then once I added Cymbalta to the mix it took another 2 months to get to max dose and I finally felt pretty darn good.
Got weaned onto Risperadone in preperation for the jab. Literally worked in 4 days. Felt i had the flu when i first went on it, metallic taste in the mouth, and all my body ached - slept on a mattress on the floor for 2 days.
But Bam - its like a lightbulb went on - all my funny ideas suddenly seemed so bloody ridiculous, seriously it was that quick. Id spent the last month writing out letters and showing them to the thermostat on the wall - cos i thought the “nurses” had put a camera in it (lol).
It can take a couple of months for a noticeable effect
First time it took about 2 months.
Be patient you will get there!
Good luck.
Don’t forget to take them every single day
And look after yourself!
1 or 2 months before things start to get better. Last time i was in the psych ward for 4 months and it took a bit less to feel some improvement… but it takes a while…
