This might sound like a silly question but I’m curious. Sometimes I can sweeten a coffee and stir vigorously and it’s as though it wasn’t sweetened and then other times it can taste very sweet. The same ready meal can taste blander one time than the previous next.
Just had a sachet of Irish cream coffee usually it tastes full bodied but this time the drink tasted really watery and as though the coffee had been briefly swirled round the mug and taken out. I checked to see if any of the powder had missed the mug as I was making it and it hadn’t.
I know sometimes my sense of smell can be stronger than others and smell and taste are interconnected. For example for days I could really smell my little jar of garlic salt even with the lid on but now- nothing.
idk if our sense of taste is affected by sz or meds but idk that certain things taste different sometimes even though they are the same flavour etc and its probably got something to do with the bacteria in your mouth and tongue maybe even a dry mouth, it may even affect your sense of smell but that is just a guess.
I know mine is a bit hypersensitive to salt. a little salt just taste like a whole ocean in my mouth.
Plus… sometimes food gets an odd metallic flavor… that is usually a cue that something isn’t going quite right.
It’s like I’m taste blind to sugar. I’m trying to kill my sweet tooth, but lots of sugar doesn’t register all the time… Dangerous for me on Seroquel.
I am something of a saltaholic . Even though I have used low sodium alternatives for years I probably still have way too much sodium.
Your a salt guy… I’m a sugar guy. Considering it’s different parts of the tongue… It makes me ponder what influences the taste buds…
The other odd thing that I think only happens to me… sometimes and emotion seems to trigger the part of the brain that takes care of taste. So Anger is a very bitter vinegar flavor and sadness taste like orange pith or bad grapefruit.
All of my senses are heightened except for my vision - I wear glasses for the most part - cannot see very far without them
Sounds like synaesthesia.
??? I will have to look into this.
Mirror-touch synesthesia
This is a rare form of synesthesia where individuals literally feel the same sensation that another person feels (such as touch)[citation needed]. For instance, when such a synesthete observes someone being tapped on their shoulder, the synesthete involuntarily feels a tap on their own shoulder as well. People with this type of synesthesia have been shown to have higher empathy levels compared to the general population. This may be related to the so-called mirror neurons present in the motor areas of the brain, which have also been linked to empathy[citation needed].
Lexical-gustatory synesthesia
This is another rare form of synesthesia where certain tastes are experienced when hearing words. For example, the word basketball might taste like waffles. It is estimated that 0.2% of the population has this form of synesthesia
Thank you for this @firemonkey.
It’s sort of close… closer then other explanations have been.
That would be me. I “see” music. I was very surprised as an adult when I discovered that no else I knew could. Thought it was normal.

Sometimes my taste can be really off, example I had a bag of chips that to me tasted flat and dried out but my parents ate them and said they tasted fine to them. I tend to eat my food on the plain side and void seasonings because my taste-buds are off and sometimes things taste stronger than they should. Don’t really have a problem with sense of smell, unless my allergies/sinuses are bothering me but the taste thing gets annoying after a while and makes it hard to decide if I like something or not because half the time the second time I have it it’ll taste different than the first, and it alternates back and forth, so if I don’t automatically love it I tend to avoid it and hate trying new things…I just always chalked it up to being an extremely picky eater.
I have pictures of the Beatles and photos of my family on the walls. My bed and set of drawers match, my computer desk matches my rug. I almost always dress nice in nice shirts I have picked out for myself.
I get it… nice one…
It sounds like you have excellent taste.
My first thought was meds. Had you taken meds near the time when you experienced the lack of taste/smell? Some of my meds that I take at night dampened my sense of taste.
In my case I’m on depot so it’s not really applicable. Will be interesting to see what others say.
are you a smoker? or burn your mouth with hot coffee?
Never smoked. Have burnt my mouth before but it didn’t seem to affect taste of the drink I was having.
lack of zinc can sometimes effect taste and smell.
also organic celtic rock salt or iodised rock salt you could use.
most people are deficient in iodine.
take care
My taste is pretty normal I’d say. Once when I took a medication the wrong way I lost my sense of taste completely and it was an absolutely awful experience. So glad to have it back!
