How do you feel about not being able to work?

I was just wondering because different personalities react differently to different jobs.

I haven’t worked in 27 years and in all that time I felt perfectly fine about it because I worked my little tail off for years in telemarketing and nursing and I was deprived of my career in nursing so no, I don’t feel bad about it. Besides, it was much harder for me than it was for everyone else because of both my sza and my autism.

Well I guess the job is not as good as I originally thought because you said they are always hiring.

I don’t want to deter you from possibly working as a dishwasher. I’m just providing some insight – there are def pros and cons I have found. You should try it dude! A lot of restaurants are hiring dishwashers

Well, my financial situation is terrible. Husband has a good job, but we are still drowning in medical debt (I have several very expensive medical problems). I really wish that I could contribute to the income. I’m thinking about making a little money from crocheting earrings. Idk yet if that will take off or not. Social Security (USA) keeps denying me for disability benefits. I don’t feel very confident that they will ever give me disability benefits. I’m too young and I’m in a very populated area, which means lower chance of approval, as so many more people are trying to get benefits in my area. Can’t approve everybody, I guess.

Besides income, I hate being alone all the time, while husband is at work. I feel so lonely. I don’t like being alone. Having a job, in the office, was nice. I got to see my coworkers (whom I liked) and chat and laugh with them. I miss that.

I worked as a server / dish washer at an old person retirement home part time in 2023, it was easy and low stress.

If you ever experience psychosis symptoms while working washing dishes doesn’t require a lot of focus.

It’s also not hard on your body.

I think it’s the best job for schizophrenia.

I don’t think it’s a black & white thing. Some dishwashing jobs may be good for schizophrenics and some may not.

Restaurants are all different. I was a dishwasher at three different restaurants and a pot washer at an old folks home. I got my first job at a restaurant as a dishwasher, it was OK, it got busy sometimes and when I worked morning shifts the breakfast cooks would occasionally stack dirty pots and pans on the floor, halfway across the room and it could take me 45 minutes to catch up and be ready for the morning rush.

That particular restaurant wasn’t bad to work at, I could see being schizophrenic and working there. I didn’t like going out on the floor and collecting tubs of dishes when the restaurant was packed with customers which was often or going out on the floor to put away dishes.

My second dishwashing job I was suffering from acute anxiety which made the job hard. It wasn’t too bad a job though, all the employees got free meals. Those were both before I became schizophrenic. My third dishwashing job was 9 years after I got diagnosed.

My janitor job now is way better than that particular dishwashing job. You had to be fast and anytime the restaurant slowed down, they expected you to clean which was a messy, dirty job.

Having been both a dishwasher and a janitor I would say dishwashing is fine as a job but my current janitor job has some perks that you might not get at a restaurant including I can work at my own pace, neither dishwashing or my janitorial job are too hard physically. I have paid sick leave, paid vacation and paid holidays, I never had those at any restaurant I worked at. I get to work by myself the whole day, I don’t have to deal with people much except say hi to the soldier office workers.

I work on a real small crew so I don’t have a lot of co workers to get along with. Yeah’ like I said before, if you’re looking for status in a job then a janitor job might not be the job for most, you’re cleaning and you don’t get thanked very often. But if you want an easy job where you don’t have a lot of people to get along with and you aren’t expected to move fast then maybe a janitor job is better for someone than a dishwashing job.

I wonder if not having a job is one of the main reasons I can’t find a girlfriend?

I mean, there’s probably a plethora of things why I can’t – but most women seem to like a guy who is relatively employed. Shows stability. I’m damaged goods, basically.

Well I’m not positive but maybe you could a girlfriend that has similar problems that you have, then maybe she won’t care.

Dishwashing and kitchen cleanup work is a good one. While it can be a bit stressful it’s not cognitive intensive so that’s good. I did some dishwashing for few years when I was in the early months in the recovery stage after my first anti-psychotics and it worked well for me. I moved away so stopped doing it but if you can find an opportunity to do it and can deal with the self acceptance issues its a good way to get out and do something to make some money.
