How do you calm down?

How how do you cope? How do you deal with life stress and mental illness stress? I’m super stressed and am looking for new ways to calm down.

My pdoc wants to take me off ativan and I think that’s a bad idea. It is my go to to calm down. But even with it I could use new ways to destress. Also just quit taking .5 mgs at nite and am now having trouble sleeping. Stress is making me sleep less too.

Everyone including my dog seems to be in pain. It’s stressing me out.

Then there’s the fact that my dad can be a very angry insensitive person. I’m struggling because he’s started three mini fires in the kitchen and I’m afraid one of these times he’s gonna start a worse fire…I know what I’m getting him for Christmas. He needs meds if you ask me. He is undiagnosed but my suspicion is that he’s bipolar. He even admitted to me that he is mentally ill.

Right now I am listening to calming music and I took ativan. that and writing this post are helping I think.

I take propranolol, you could try that. My pdoc says it is very safe and non-addictive.

Also, here are some of the non-pill things I do:

(1) go for a walk,
(2) practice breathing exercises,
(3) color mandalas (alone),
(4) wear ear plugs (noise really stresses me out),
(5) wear a broad brimmed hat to the store or other busy environment (excessive movement and busy environments also stress me out).

Can you figure out what your triggers are? If so, you could have a specific thing to do to get rid of those triggers. Like I did with the hat and ear plugs.

With out getting into detail because i know it will get me flagged… i really believe this
" all things work for good for those that love God and are called according to his purpose."
Takes all the pressure away for me ,. When i do get a little anxious i take a shower and pray.
Would like to share more. But I’ll just share that out of respect for those that don’t understand. Hope it encourages.

Thanks @yaz1, @amethyst and @5713 good ideas you all have. Deep breathing is a good one for me. I like to breathe in the positive and breathe out the negative then let the negative turn to dust or go to the light. Praying is helpful too. Tea. Thanks for reminding me of all this. I am on 120 mgs of propranonol in the am. It’s extended release. Maybe more would help

Can’t go along with the shower, (stressful), but prayer is much like meditation. It helps to center your thoughts and place your burdens outside of yourself.
If I didn’t have faith in God I wouldn’t be here today. Anyone can believe what they choose, but no one can deny that I’ve been through some heavy s***, and I’m here to tell you, anyone, that it was God alone who got me through. Flag away, but it’s the truth.

Meditation can be calming but as a spiritual person i put a gaurd up as to what i allow in my mind. I think people can get mixed up in the ucult by opening there mind up to anything. Just a thought.

I calm down…taking a walk…eating…masturbating…drinking alcohol…talking to a friend…smoking a ciggarette…or ecigarette…

Thanks for all the replies. My dog was in a lot of pain and was screaming in pain. It freaked me out. He seems better now but I still get stressed easy and can always use new ideas to calm myself both from sz stress and regular

I can understand that. I don’t meditate, but I do pray. I made the correlation because some people can’t relate to prayer and I wanted to point out how similar prayer is to meditation.

Water soothes me.

Outdoors in nature or in bath or shower.

Knitting,comforting food n drink.

I think olanzapine was is s calming medication think it was for me anyway but we are different in how we respond.

Talking nicely to oneself.

Make action plan and get help so the responsibility is not all on you regarding fires in kitchen.

Get a carer if you can afford it or are eligible.

Hope you will feel better soon and good wishes for you and your father.
