I would find the history fascinating. Science has gone through several revolutions, and I find it fascinating
My dissertation was on Eugenics specifically.
Unfortunately I have not kept up to date with things at all, which is a shame
I have applied back at the same University as they have a grant for disabled people that would cover the fee
Hopeful I get it, but weāll see what happens
Itās for a masters in Human and Social Data Science
My maths sucks, so thatās something Iāll need to work on before it starts
The best of luck to you!!
I had an interest in sociology, but mainly the qualitative side of things. If you are qualitatively minded, quantitative sociology can be a real drag.
Thatās not to say you wouldnāt do well at interpreting data and things like that.
I was forced to do a Quantitative dissertation. That did not impress me, and I hated doing it. Still got a 1st for it though
It helped my Insights career quite a bit.
My preference was theory however.
I used to get lost in the library reading all sorts of books.
My University had 750,000 of them in the library !
I had the option of doing a masters in sociology, but the requirement was to do a quantitative study. Or at least make the thesis something that could be quantitatively studied. I wanted to do something like the topic of collectivism in nursing and the erosion of individuality in social health expectations. I donāt think numbers matter as much in that as doing a qualitative study.
I think itās more to do with a view to employability rather than a purist way of studying
When I found out I could not do a masterpiece on theory I was very upset.
My project was going to be on the Sociology of reality, and it was going to mesh in with a Quantum theory of the Universe/ paradigms etc
Hard to explain now, but basically at the time I was psychotic and completely out of my mind.
Instead I picked a leftist issue on campus and got about 50 responses to a survey and somehow that was what they wanted. Pfft!
Psychotic or not, I think they are generally trying to make thinking more āgroundedā rather than theoretical pie in the sky, flights of fancy that even neurotypical students develop when they have been in a cerebral academic institution for a number of years.
When I said that was a ātopic likeā what I was going to do, thatās not really what I was thinking at the time, I was really thinking different.
I started smoking at 15 to fit in, and quickly became hooked. I was only a year away from legal smoking age, and I looked older, so I never got carded.
Here. Try one of these.
I stole some from my Mum at age 13 or so and tried them with pals down the woods. Not regular smoker until a year or so later when we would buy some from the garage and go down the water tower to just smoke. It takes serious effort to like smoking and we put in the work. Quit 15 years ago and donāt miss it one bit.
