How can you tell the difference between intrusive thoughts or actual hearing voices?

My internal monolog is so messed up. I have intrusive thoughts popping in my brain all the time, ‘‘they’re stealing you thoughts, they’re laughing about you’’ they’re out to get you’’ I have gotten so used to it. What’s the difference between thoughts and voices?

I think of intrusive thoughts like my own thoughts being twisted into things I’d never say or do

I can’t explain the answer to your question in words, though I do know the difference sometimes. I guess the intrusive thoughts feel like people forcing words into my head that make me think paranoid thoughts, while voices are outside people talking to me and threatening me.

The intrusive thing is other people twisting my own thought. Oh, I can’t figure out how to explain it logically, prolly cause it’s not logical.

But seriously, up until recently I thought I was the only one terrified of having my thoughts stolen. This is the third mention I’ve seen in the past month.

In my case, I have a strong delusion about words. Both having my words stolen, and being suffocated by other people’s words.

For me intrusive thoughts are all those thoughts that I don’t want to have but I am virtually forced to formulate. Voices rarely happened to me but when they did they were not forcing themselves through me. In an intrusive thought the hallucination isn’t the thought, it’s the will and emotion behind it that’s the hallucination. Voices instead were the reverse, they existed because I wasn’t present, it was the mental equivalent of me relaxing my bladder and pissing my pants.

Thanks for your explanations people. I get hallucinations like voices, but not intrusive thoughts per se. I get unwanted thoughts at times but I just push them away. I don’t feel like they are being forced on me.
