High processing speed and autism&sz

Why do people say szs and autistics often have a low processing speed? Mine was the highest index on WAIS-IV, a cognitive ability test

Maybe it’s a misconception?

My processing speed is high, but it doesn’t work like a typical persons does

Slow processing of social-emotional side of things.

Mentally ill people overall have better cognitive empathy but emotional empathy works as a lubricant in many essential parts of life where we lack.

SZ can struggle with slow thoughts or no thoughts/feelings at times. Which slows you down in social situations.

Same. I can read and process some types of information at a much higher speed than my contemporaries.

Slow and steady wins the race!

When I am angry my processing speed goes to next level.

Until then I am very very slow :sloth:

Taking about level where is @LevelJ1

With me it depends. I do well at Wonderlic type tests, which allow for about 14.4 seconds per question. They require good processing speed. However I don’t do well at digit symbol substitution that is a test of processing speed. The latter may be related to my having a very poor visual memory. After the mid 20s or so processing speed gets slower. As with all parts of an IQ test you’re compared to people of the same age. So I would be compared to other 67 year old. Norms are age adjusted. Generally all areas of cognition decline with age. Some sooner than others . The decline is more gradual, i.e less steep, in those of high intelligence. The decline doesn’t = dementia. Your IQ after age based adjustment stays very much the same.

My processing speed is slow, especially in conversation. An unfortunate side effect is that I don’t think before I speak because I don’t want to appear slow.

I like writing because it allows me to gather my thoughts.

I prefer writing too.

It depends I’ve read, some people’s IQs and such suffer from autism and some have a high IQ because of it I believe. I could be wrong.

A large range of cognitive ability can be found among those with ASD/autism . It used to be said that as a group those with autism non-verbal > verbal IQ, with the opposite being true of Asperger’s.

weird cuz i was diagnosed with aspergers and my nonverbal iq is higher than verbal

At work I find typing and making notes helps me remember a lot of what’s going on

Don’t look back at them often

I should have said ‘tend to have as a group’ Those with Asperger’s are more likely to have verbal > non-verbal IQ, not definitely will have. In my case it’s definitely true. Non- verbally I have a spiky profile, but even at its best it’s not as good as my verbal IQ.

I tend to struggle with things like mental rotation, 3 x3 matrices, figure weights. Figure weights loads heavily on quantitive reasoning , as does tests of numeral ability using digits rather than shapes. I do significantly better at digit based quantitive reasoning than at shape based quantitive reasoning.

Sorry, i dont really know what you guys are talking about but my thinking is usually pretty sharp, the only thing is i have been told i may have too much in my head & my lifestyle could be causing my cfs so right now i am completely restructuring my life. sorry if this is off topic.

Do you find that people can get uncomfortable and even defensive in a work setting by your input?

I find my perspective tends to sort of scare people at first. But after they have a chance to get on the same page they buy in

What I am trying to work out at the moment is how to bring up new ideas etc without freaking people out

I am not saying they’re stupid or incompetent but I have noticed it takes a while for normal people to see what I mean

Maybe it’s my fault for not communicating it in the best way.

But my thoughts are at the moment that some people don’t like to step out of established convention
