Hey, I'm not saying people in the South aren't intelligent

But when I went to the deep South, the were anything but deep. I went to the movies there to see “Smokey and the Bandit” and after the movie ended the audience broke up into study groups to discuss whether Bo and Cletus was fair to Buford.

That sounds normal to me.

I don’t think it is fair that people in America pick on people in their own country, but lick people that are far less clean and kind in other countries. Now that is schizophrenicism of the patriot. :joy:

South people are like anyone else. You just haven’t looked hard enough. I’ve lived all over the USA, and I’ve researched all of the world present all the way to ancient, and I can tell you that there isn’t so much of a difference between people of different regions except styles. The same kinds of niches exist everywhere, and after you go there, and you get to know them, you’ll see that it’s all the same almost wherever you go. The same is true of high schools and work places etc.

Meh, I like the South. It doesnt have the stench of elitism that many other parts of the country have. Had nothing but nice times when I was in the South.

ive grown up in the south, albeit the northern mountain south as opposed to the deep lowland south. its really weird because a lot of people can be super super judgemental and look down on others and be hateful to those that are different, yet somehow really friendly and welcoming and stereotypically charming. and it seems like everyone is either the first or the second with no inbetween

I’ve never been to the south outside of Florida really I think…

I don’t think theyre unintelligent just a little more traditional and conservative.

Every country or area has smart, stupid and in between people, some places are just more advanced in terms of intellectualism of the culture.

For example, my area is not very intellectual. We have rich pricks and the lower classes are always trying to keep up with the rich pricks so they don’t have time for intellectualism. The west coast is a beautiful thing because the culture is to be intellectual… Then there’s me, an east coaster who is fortunate enough to be able to invest his time and effort into intellectualism…I’m a minority where I live in a lot of ways.

I think the liberal areas are more naturally intellectual but even places like my county can lose out on that vibe and culture because of weird predicaments.

I lived in GA for years and saw some things you couldn’t imagine.

A lot of people are idiots just because the standards are lower in those small southern communities.

They have tons of intelligent people, but, like me (of course) they move away and take their talent to somewhere they can be appreciated.

Still, I miss the white trash culture sometimes,

They really know how to party…

All the great writers seem to move to the west coast or somewhere up in Vermont or something…

Somewhere discreet, spread out, and liberal at the same time… Which is why all my favorite writers are Californians or north westerners for some reason even if they weren’t born there. Like Jack Kerouac and Alan Watts…one is from Mass and one from England…both moved to California for much of their life. And a billion more examples.

Living my adult life in Northern California,

And am a writer…

Maybe you’re onto something…

I’m from Oklahoma. Oklahoma is where the South and the Midwest intersect. The Oklahoma accent is a combination of the Southern drawl and the Midwestern twang. There are stupid people wherever you go. It’s not fair to put down a whole region because of a few dim people.

This is extremely disparaging.

I can never do the west coast thing again despite being a writer…I think I’d go the JD Sallinger route and move to Vermont. Although hella cold in the wintertime!!!

Connecticut is ALRIGHT. It’s the most neutral state in the world to me. Neither good or bad. Just neutral. Boring. State.

But I cant move YET.

You’re right.

It was pretty harsh.

I do like the south and believe there are some great people there.

Smart, driven people.

I just got a little carried away trash talking.

Apologies if I offended you.

And city life is better with the overpopulation, crime, and liberal policies? At least in the South it seems people are friendlier.

it does seem southern people and country people have a need for fairness. when i moved to the city i began hearing, “it’s just business”. that’s what you say when you take someone’s home that’s been too sick to pay the mortgage, or you raise the rent or whatever.

stuff like that don’t fly in the country. everyone knows where everyone lives.

Everything is slower paced in the south don’t they say? The added pressure of citylife in the northeast and west coast has advantages, but so does the slow pace in the south.

No need to compare states guys, we live in the US OF A, the UNITED states of America. Where our country was designed as a ton of little nations (states) as a place you can freely move to another country (or state) as you please. That was our design of our nation in the first place. Although non-constitutionalists who I neither endorse or decry in this post will try to convince you differently, there is no arguing the original intention of our country was to appeal to different tastes by setting up United countries together in the same nation.

You’re right. This is why each State has their own Supreme Court and Constitution. The 10th Amendment provides States with unilateral powers other than powers expressly provided to the U.S. Constitution. Smoking marijuana and the death penalty are examples of State powers.

Yeah I’m libertarian although I hate labels at the end of the day. But I’m well versed in constitutional philosophy. Ron Paul is my hero! Although I’m a fake libertarian because I’m more concerned about the social issues which I’m liberal on. Don’t really care about the financial stuff all that much. Although still obviously important. I like the whole idea of smaller govt. and states rights but socially I’m very liberal therefore I consider myself libertarian

I would tell you why but it would close the thread…lol

I try to lose my prejudice against southerners but it is deeply ingrained from my parents who used to laugh and make fun of bible belt preachers and how they slowly repeated over and over phrases and sentences as though their audience was truly “mentally challenged.” I learned to react as a reflex to people from the South as stupid.
