Health and Hygiene

I have always had trouble with this for the most part since I was diagnosed. I don’t really care to shower that much or put cologne on, sometimes even brush my teeth.

Now don’t get me wrong I don’t go like 2 weeks without showering, The longest I go is about a week, but I have problems showering every day or every other day for that matter. It’s not that I hate water and soap just that I don’t feel the need I need too.

Anybody else have problems like this. I know it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but hey the illness just makes me overlook it and not think it’s a problem.

My wife get’s on me all the time telling me to shower and put on cologne and brush my teeth, which makes me feel like crap, but sometimes she has to be the one to tell me to get in the shower or else that’s when I take one.

I was just wondering does the illness do this allot and to allot of people? How often does this occur in sz type people?

When I’m at my worst I don’t shower and it’s common. When I’m well I shower every day or every other day. I think the not showering is maybe what they call a negative symptom.

Having said that, my mother is a perfectly healthy 55 year old and her showering habits are dreadful and no schizophrenia. So it is also common among those with no sz I think too. More than we think.

It get’s real bad sometimes man. To the point where my wife has to follow me to the bathroom so I take a shower that night. I can go a week easily no problem just keep deodrant on some of the time and cologne too. Now brushing me teeth im not as bad as. Showering is my worst problem. I am taking medication, but I still am having the negative symptom of not keeping up with hygiene.

It’s negative symptoms and they are harder to control because the meds don’t address them.

Positives are helped by the meds. Negatives not so. It’s frustrating but small things are important. Make some lists and tick em off that you do them. Do some regular exercise. Try to do one thing a day etc.

When I was depressed it felt like a chore to shower and at times I would go 2 days without showering, however, I always brushed my teeth and washed my face.

Now, by default I shower twice a day. It helps me start and conclude my day. Personal hygiene does contribute to how you feel about yourself and relate to others. I also visit my hair dresser once a week, and have a grooming day every Sunday.

Yeah @Qwerty1 It’s all about repetition and doing the same old same old everyday! Habit helps the schizophrenic no end and it’s really important to do those little things.

I shower everyday and try to do those little things. It’s really important for us all!
