Have you ever paid for something exclusively in pennies?

Back years ago, one of our bridges had a toll on it. I think I was low on cash at the time so I had to pay the entire toll in pennies. The people in the booth were totally pissed at me. Said something like “the nerve of some people”, or something like that. Lol. Wasn’t my fault, its all I had with me.

I cant remember what the poll amount was, this must’ve been 20 or 30 years ago. It’s been a long time since they removed the toll booth on that bridge. Maybe 50 cents or something?

I also remember doing this once when I was very young, maybe 10 or so at a small store. Again, cashier was pissed. I remember saying something like, “well, I got to spend them somewhere”, and she said angrily, “Yeah, but does it have to be here?”.

Those are the only 2 instances that I can remember.

Anywho, what about you all?

No I haven’t. But I’ve read those stories of people who pay thousands with small change.

It’s a sure way to make people angry.

Oh that reminds me of the time I was low on cash well not actually I was broke and was starving I took like 3$ in McDonald’s to grab a burger mostly pennies.

Well my mindset was money is money however they refused to serve me cause that’s all I had was change.

A customer at work paid with the lowest norwegian currency to pay for a bible as a protest because he had a idea from somewhere that all bibles ought to be free. He paid about 150 dollars in small change.

Toll booths are a scam. Like our tax money already paying for these roads right?

I’m the crazy old lady who pays exact change when possible.

That said, I haven’t paid in all pennies in decades. But when I was young I did it for things like a pop or other low cost thing.

Nowadays, for a Coke Zero, or some other $2 or less item, I’ll pay in quarters if that’s all I have, but nothing smaller

When I worked at the liquor store many years ago some jerk came in with a bucket full of pennies for a $20 purchase. I refused to sell. F that! I wasn’t a bank. It was the riffraff that probably stole that bucket from his kid.

:joy:

I don’t think it’s legal tender over here over a certain amount- and I don’t think it’s anything absurd…like $20- or something. Australia is a cool place but they legislate against a lot of fun it would seem :frowning:

Here in Canada, pennies aren’t accepted anymore. 5 cent nickels are the lowest coins.

Just looked. You can only use coin to 10 times the value of the coin in Australia. So a $1 or $2 coin the max is only $20 dollars. The stores don’t have to accept you trying to pay with 5 cent pieces for example.
