Have you ever been on an antipsychotic that stops working?

I have been on Risperdal for a month or two and it seemed to be working for a couple of weeks, now symptoms are returning. Why would I get these delusions again after such a short time?

Everybody’s brains are different. Are you using illegal drugs or anything? There is a theory that the brain eventually just creates more dopamine receptors. Perhaps this happend quickly for you. I don’t really know. I’m not a doctor.

I started Risperdal about 4 years or so ago, the highest dose I was on, was 4 mg - it worked well for me at this dose , then went down to 3 mg and then 2.5 mg and as low as 1.5 mg - Under the 2 mg the dose did not work so well.
I am now on 2.5 mg and it does not seem to be working as well, I am having quite a bit of mood instability.
I may have to raise it in about 2 weeks or switch meds at this point, becasue I do not really want to experience more side effects at the higher doses - we shall see.

@dusk I dont know what dose you are on now, but you may have to go to a higher dose - it might not be a question of the Rispedal crapping out on you, it just might mean that you are not on the right dose, and it needs to be adjusted - good luck with everything!

Thanks to both of you. I am at 5 mg and the dr doesn’t seem to want to go any higher. Will find out Tuesday.

Yeah if you go any higher you’ll start getting side effects.

I wondered the same about my antipsychotic amisulpride. I was originally on 400mg which worked, then a year later I had a relapse in a stressful time and had to be put on 600mg which worked, then a few months later I went back to 400mg and relapsed, so I had to go back to 600mg, and it took a long time to get back to stability, and it didn’t seem to work on its own anymore for the voices and negative symptoms, so my pdoc put me on a low dose of olanzapine alongside my 600mg amisulpride. Now it seems to be working ok.

The point is, maybe when you experience stress, the symptoms worsen, so it seems like the pills aren’t working anymore. But I heard from someone on this forum that meds sometimes do stop working.

Find out by your pdoc, that’s the best.

I think there is a strong correlation between dosage changes and not taking them and relapse!

Lots of people I know have tried to convince their dr that there taking them.

I’m not sure until last week for the first time in 5-6 yrs that my meds one of the might be working!

They have never been the magic bullet I initially hoped for, none of the 4!

yeah I was on an antipsychotic for many years and I had to be taken off it by the doc, I decided to make big changes to my life and I no longer take antipsychotics or any form of sedatives. It took years to retrain and rehab myself to a better level of management without antipsychotics. I no longer have positive or negative symptoms, but I have to accept a more simpler and low stimulation life. I have better understanding of the uses of antipsychotics and there essential needs. Being off the antipsychotic, I have more freedom of emotions, which also could mean the possibility of pain. Sometimes it’s best to be numb
