Hi all,
I’ve been reading studies and there’s mixed evidence for TMS and negative symptoms. Has anyone tried it and had some success? What differences did you notice? About how long did it take for you to feel it? Would you recommend it?
A couple old members used it, but didn’t have much success. I think I remember @LevelJ1 saying he would try it, but I don’t know if that ever happened or if I am misremembering.
Its just for depression my psychiatrist said, not for schizophrenia. He refused to prescribe it for my severe negative symptoms. He gave me Wellbutrin but it didnt work in my case, maybe it will work for you.
I use a PEMF machine on my head and joints. Very fast relief. That is a similar tech.
I’m sorry the Wellbutrin didn’t work for you. rTMS is only FDA approved for depression but I live near a research facility so I’m trying to get in for non-FDA approved use
I got approved for it as treatment resistant depression.
It improved my mood, helped a bit with motivation.
But lately ive had some symptoms so id say improved me 50%
Ive been like 80 times. At a research facility. It was all covered for free until covid hit. Now its 25 a treatment.
I go once a month now as maintenance
I want it. but i need it to attack the right circuits for motivation and negs.
This sounds similar to ECT.
Its different than ect as they use high powered magnets and is highly targeted to a specific area. Theres no issues with memory loss or anything for it as well.
There doing studies on magnetic seizure therapy as well now. Lower risk of memory issues as its more closesly targeted to one spot.
That one is similar to ect in the seizure sense.
I had a friend in college who had a magnet surgically installed in her chest to stop seizures.
@supernova
magnets are very interesting I guess it has some sort of effect on the electrical system of the body? I dont know much about the human body so I wont pretend that I do know
I know for the treatment you cant have metal fillings or any other metal near your head/neck and you cant have a history of seizures.
heres an article on mst for treatment resistant schizophrenia

For negative symptoms the thing to target is dopamine. Low dopamine in certain regions in brain gives negative symptoms. When dopamine gets too low it gives parkinson like symptoms. ECT, TMS etc does not target dopamine. May be stimulants a better alternative to these treatments as it have dopamine improving things in it. But need to be careful as dopamine can also give positive symptoms and even psychosis in some.
@pr21
tms and ect does improve dopamine but it also improves serotonin and other stuff. I think also the glutamatergic system.

TMS may be better. ECT carries several side effects particularly memory loss.
