Has anyone else got schizophrenia from ADHD medicines?

I got psychosis from ADHD medicines and doctors swore it was schizophrenia. To this day im glad I stopped taking antipsychotics on my own as doctor would have just kept me on it. its still a struggle im 1 month off rispedal with no voices just hormonal side effects that came from risperdal. other than that i might still be on those meds.

doctors kept saying i was not on enough adderall to cause psychosis but i know the difference between voices and visions and no voices and visions and im fine now in that regard.

Quitting medication can be a dangerous thing, you should always discuss it with a doctor.
I made a bad choice of quitting my anti-bacterial medicine after it made me sick (and made me go through a episode) and now things are only worse.
By the way: The medication was called Bactrim. I suggest you avoid it.

It’s a real toss up as to what could have triggered my psychosis. Yes I did enough Adderall to make a sloth dance and yes it eventually began to cause psychosis. But I had taken Ritalin as prescribed as a child without any negative effect and had certainly seen enough Adderall in my teens and that never triggered psychosis in me either. It wasn’t until I was very nearly 24 that my psychosis began to creep up on me. For me anyway there were so many possible triggers in my life that it could have been any one of them.

All I know is that schizophrenia does not as far as anyone knows run in my family nor is there any mental illness in my immediate family…just little old me. I know amphetamine type drugs can cause psychosis but that this is generally in high doses…but everyone is differently sensitive to these things too. As far as I’m concerned though as I said ā€œso many variablesā€ that coming to any one conclusion as to what triggered it is impossible.

Taking ā€˜stimulants’ when you suffer from schizophrenia or another form of psychosis can sometimes do more harm than good. Even antidepressant use can result in worsening of psychosis and mood in certain vulnerable individuals, especially if bipolar is part of the picture. When deciding to get off of a medication, it is wise to properly consult with your psychiatrist - never take yourself off of a med without the direction and approval of a doctor - there is a chance that you might still be afflicted with schizophrenia, but just doing better without the stimulant. I would get a second opinion if you can

You can never really know what caused it because of how many factors can play to it.
I know medication never did it to me, I almost never take any. I went this way before I ever took medication for anything. (around 13-14 years of age)
It could have possibly been a cause of my birth mishap where I was oxygen starved and nearly died at birth. Maybe it was from the awfulness of when I was growing up.
Could be family related, my mother has had a psychotic episode before where she believed the government was in her head and that people were out to get her. She claims the voices stick around but she ignores them.

It sure is a strange thing. I just wish I had a true diagnoses which I’m shooting for soon.

I can understand going off of stimulants or ADHD medication if it is triggering psychosis. Adderall triggered psychosis with my son recently but he was diagnosed sz in 2011. I’m not sure going off of antipsychotics is the best plan. Regardless of what triggered the psychosis it still needs to be managed.

I’m not allowed to have any ADHD meds. My pdoc says they give me psychosis. But I’ve been off the for two years and I still hear voices. I had been on Concerta for 6 years without any problems. Low dose, 36 mg.

Then suddenly my brain crashed. But I belive it was extreme stress causing it.

Hi y all, i had a lamictal induced psychosis from only taking 25 mg, it propably messed up my glycine, i already had schizophrenia, it was propably already low, because when i took minocycline is restored glycine thingie, i dont know the exact way but anyway i’m veryyyyyyyyyyy tired … of failed trials

People with schizophrenia had a predisposition to it before their onset. Then come the environmental stressors. I doubt ADHD meds caused your schizophrenia. Back before I was diagnosed the doctors swore I had ADHD and put me on a very small amount of ritlin, because I wasnt telling the whole story. My 15 year old son is on twice as much. But that is when things got crazy. The ADHD meds caused me to be very psychotic. But the point is I ALREADY had schizophrenia.
