Great Danes

Great Danes have a very short lifespan. Yosemite will be 10 on the 24 of May. If he makes it. That is very old for a Great Dane. I have started taking him twice a week to used a water treadmill. The trip is just over a 100 miles one way. But he is well worth it.
Yesterday I saw blood in his stool. So this afternoon he has a doctor appointment. I love my dogs no matter what. But watching them grow old is always the hardest thing to do.

Yosemite was a tiny little thing when he first came to live with me. At his best he was 150 lbs, But he has been losing weight.

Why do Great Danes live less than other dog breeds? I’ve no idea…

The larger breeds have the shortest lifespan.

Hmm that might indeed be true. I just skimmed through an article which says that tiny chihuahuas have the longest life expectancy (15-20 years) while Great Danes average 6-8 years :disappointed:

It seems like you really take care of your doggy and are deeply invested in him. I know what it is to love your dog so much. I had a ridgeback years ago and 3 weeks ago I just got a puppy pug.

Your Great Dane is still with you. Give home tons of hugs from me.

I’d like to get a golden retriever or a Siberian husky. It’s probably too hot in Oklahoma for a husky, though.

I hope your doggy’s vet visit goes okay! Great Danes are beautiful dogs. It’s a shame their lifespan average is so short.

I used to live with a Great Dane. 165 lbs and 6’2 when he stood with his paws on your shoulders. Terrified of my cat, though. He was the sweetest thing, even if his drool was copious and gelatinous.

I’d never heard of a water treadmill before. What a good idea! It sounds like you are an excellent human companion. I hope the vet can help Yosemite.

Just got back from the Vet. She said the blood was not a big problem. So that is a relief. His pads on his back feet are cracked. So I have to keep his booties on him more and use some Bag Balm on his feet.

Thank you everyone for your concern.
