The difference between an A and a B- this past semester has been me giving myself permission not to push myself when I really needed to rest.
In the past I might have gotten discouraged when I missed an assignment and quit going all together. I don’t know if it’s perfectionism or the tendency to blow myself up but either way it hasn’t served me very well.
Maybe it’s DBT helping me regulate my emotions, tolerate distress, and stay in my wise mind.
But also I think trying to work through my trauma with a counselor has helped me recognize when I feel overwhelmed and need to take care of myself.
If you subtracted the missing assignments from my grade, I would have gotten a 98.8% though.
In the end I think what matters is that I got to watch and talk about a lot of queer tv. That’s all I wanted to do anyway. Now I’ve got 17 seasons of Ru Paul’s Drag Race to watch and that’s honestly the best takeaway from the course.
Yo if B- is bad then I’m going to have to reconsider the worth of my 3.2 gpa
It’s not that bad. Some grad schools require a 3.5 to enter. That’s the only problem you may have, that you will find some elite institutions too exclusive.
As someone who graduated high school with a 2.0, I recognize that a 3.2 is good score. I hope this post doesn’t have the effect of inadvertently diminishing anyone else’s achievements.
It’s more that I normally push myself harder than is reasonable or necessary due to my limitations. It takes a toll on my health and I haven’t prioritized that in past.
You’re right though. I think in the past I’ve wanted to get into a competitive graduate school, but I don’t have plans to go to grad school anymore.
Congratulations on passing the class. Resilience is so important. Many companies will not hire students with straight “A” because they’re not sure how they’ll react when they fall down. And they will fall down. Will they get up? In fact, there’s a book called Why “A” Students Work for “C” students and “B” Students Work for the Government. Question: what do you call the person who graduates last in medical school? Doctor.
If you want to see RuPaul back in the 1980s you can use this website’s search bar to find my thread: Nelson Sullivan: The original vlogger.
Thanks for the info on Nelson Sullivan’s tapes. What a treasure trove! You’ve sent me down a club kid rabbit hole.
I remember Marilyn Manson playing Christina in Party Monster but how cool to see her in real life. What an interesting character.
I have a feeling I’m going to spend some time on this YouTube channel. How cool that we have all this footage of that particular time in the city, thanks to Mr. Sullivan.

Congrats!!! I get the feeling of dealing with perfectionism, I was top ten in my class in high school (graduated from there just as psychotic symptoms were starting to develop? Redevelop? Idk), and it’s been a lot harder to make those grades…at least when I was initially in college it was lol
I’m looking forward to trying again in the fall, and I’m wishing best of luck to you too if you go for another semester (or working if you’re not!!!)!!! May our academic/knowledge pursuits be fruitful!!!
It focused on queerness in popular culture, mainly television. A lot of theory.
It’s part of a DEI (diversity, equity, & inclusion) academic program. Of course my public university just had to eliminate all its DEI offices in compliance with the tyrannical Trump administration or risk losing federal funding. It may be politics but it’s also real policy that has real world implications. In this case, it has impacted my program of study so I feel maybe it’s ok to mention?
