how to not care what others think of you because of fake or misleading gossip?

I was told by a romantic interest long ago, “What other people think about you is none of your business.” It’s always stayed with me.
Also, people are saying more about themselves when they talk about others.
Life with my in-laws is filled with gossip. I stay out of it, because if I say something, it will eventually come back around and hit me in the back of the head.

Yeah, the guy at work talks behind everybody’s back to me. It took me a while to realize he was probably doing the same thing to me.
it was sort of like this quote but not entirely
i personally think it is ok to talk about other people’s non personal things in a fair way from time to time perhaps taking out the name.
but when people start talking misleading or negative ignorant things about others it is dumb
i have done this a lot in the past
i try to be fair now
because i see how unpleasant it can be
i might still not be perfect on this but i do try now at least
this one is not too bad either but i can’t find the quote i was looking for
The way I look at it, don’t worry about things that people don’t say to your face, gossip will always be around, if those people are nice when they talk to you in person that’s all that matters, just my opinion.
