Good heart health NOT ENOUGH in schizophrenia

They talk about heart health metabolic parameters etc.
My case shows that this is not enough to cure the disorder.
I have very good physical fitness(including aerobic and muscle strength)
and I still suffer terribly cognitively.
What is more, before onset of the disease I was low fit, way WAY lower than now,
and still my cognition and functioning were much better than now.
Still I encourage you to excercise hard, for the time when a cure is found.
Also, my case shows that some schizophrenics can improve their fitness in a huge way.

I would like to know what and how you did to achieve your fitness conditioning? I was in great shape because I love physical fitness (I still maintain my condition and don’t look bad) but since I started medication I have been in a spiral of weakness. I feel my muscles are weak and almost useless.

What did you do? What you keep doing to be in shape?

and my lifestyle and this illness is going to kill me

I started medication and just gained weight like crazy. It doesn’t matter what fitness routine I do. I just cannot lose weight. I also drink tho and that’s gotta be part of it.

well i’m def not starving myself. i eat normal portions. but still i gain the weight

I tried to explain this to a dietician. She said all research pointed towards increased appetite as the means of weight gain. I’m not so sure.

Darth, you ask to know here is my reply.
I don’t take medications. There are claims, that medications harm your fitness.
I tried Risperdal it had a very bad effect on me, since then I don’t take medications.
I go to a health club. there are devices there where you can do strength training.
Now conditioning. I was low fit, started off with swimming(in my experience this is good
for low fit people). Initially I would get tired quickly and needed rest before continuing.
Then I improved and could swim dozens of pools without rest.
Then I moved to rowing(indoor rower). Here I would tire within 30 seconds of rowing
hard and needed rest. I started with sets of 30 seconds and forced rest.
And now I can row hard for an hour without rest.
Of course running is fine, but for some people it causes knee problems,
and there is a risk of falling.So for me its rowing.But I can also run quickly for a long period,
if need be(did it a couple of days ago).

but I can still run with my insoles

Medications have harmed my fitness, that’s right, I hope I stop taking them in a matter of six months or so.

I am curious, if I may ask, how do you manage your symptoms without medications? And how fitness has affected your life in that sense?

Risperdal has been known to have a negative effect on your physical fitness. Not all drugs are like that for all people. I take Geodon, and it does not sedate me or make me gain weight. It might be a good idea for you to try a different medication before giving up on them altogether.

Physical fitness can help you with the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, but it does not treat the positive symptoms. No matter how much you work out, you will still hallucinate and your delusions will be just as strong. The only way to treat those symptoms are through medication. Cognitive behavioral therapy can also help, to a lesser degree.

Never had that problem on Risperdal

If you have mild anxiety you’ll work out

Every drug is different for every person. It’s good that you didn’t have negative side effects from it. Risperdal made me gain a ton of weight and sleep all day. Geodon is a much better fit for my brain.
