Today I saw a new pdoc. It was a waste of time to go, because he didn’t want to change my dosage and up the olanzapine that is working. I have gotten to a stage where I feel that the pdocs can’t do anything else for me. The only reason I go is to get my meds. Pretty dull actually! I seem to be doing ok, except for a few glitches here and there like once I heard voices, and sometimes I feel that dullness of negative symptoms return. At this stage what is there that the pdocs can do? Nothing.
You saw only one Pdoc - so don’t overgeneralize and think that all Pdocs are the same. If you’re not happy with your results - its not a bad idea to get a second opinion on what else can be done.
Pdocs are just like the rest of us - individuals. They have their knowledge and biases and so its frequently helpful to get feedback from other people.
I dont know @Hadeda, did you ask him why he dose not want to raise the Olanzapine?
He must have a reason for this, you have to put him on the spot and ask him why he dose not want to raise it - maybe there is a valid reason for it? My psychiatrist seems to be pretty conservative also, and adjusts my meds only when I am really not doing well. good luck to you and dont give up completely!
Maybe you should try and build a good relationship with one psychiatrist if possible. I didn’t like my pdoc at first but after five years going to the same pdoc it appears that she is really listening to me and she adjust my meds to my needs. Getting your meds to suit your condition can be tricky and requires a good understanding between you and the pdoc. I once wrote a note to my pdoc telling her how I felt and she upped my meds at the time. Maybe you should try something like that. Just a suggestion. I really do hope you get your meds sorted out soon.
Well from what I’ve learned that’s really all a pdoc is for. Giving you a diagnosis and then giving you medication for it, just like any other doctor. Not sure what else you were expecting.
Hmm, I wonder why?
Yes - generally if you’re doing OK - they don’t want to raise the dosage. Doctors today usually want to keep the dose as low as possible while you are doing well without much in the way of break-through symptoms. That sounds like its the case for you. The lower dose usually results in less side effects - which is a common problem.
Why would you want to raise the dose?
When I was seeing one of my old docs he suggested going for walks instead of increasing my risperidal. The risperidal wasn’t helping anyway. Then another of my old pdoc had me on so much medication that it seemed I was stoned most of the time. My current pdoc listened to me when. I said I was manic so he prescribed lithium, haldol and ativan.
not all shrinks are bad, i have had two good ones, both female and compassionate…so don’t lose hope.
take care
