Getting the emotional levels just right

Pre Consta : Strong response to negative stimuli . Muted response to positive stimuli.
Some anxiety.

Consta: Reduced response to negative stimuli but possibly increased anxiety. Muted response to positive stimuli. Outside of spells of anxiety feel emotionally flat .

How does the medication affect your emotional levels ?

Abilify has antidepressant properties so while I’ve got a plate load of cognitive and negative symptoms I don’t seem to get down about it.

What were you on pre-consta? Mood stabilizers? If so, don’t forget to factor their effects in.

I was on Olanzapine but only taking it <=50% of the time.

Depot injections can produce mood shifts over the course of the month. Some people on here complain about them running out three weeks in. Of course! The release of the drug is not uniform over time, and I suppose that can lead to highs and lows.

Emotional flatness can be a side effect of antipsychotics, its called neuroleptic induced deficit syndrome (NIDS) if you haven’t heard of it. It can even occur in those who have disorders outside the psychosis spectrum like OCD. Or in perfectly healthy people. Leading to the mistaken diagnosis of sz.

My current meds keep my emotions in check, before meds I was mood swinging all over the place. I’d go from happy to crying about nothing in moments, or laughing at something sad. I’d also have hypomania for a day or more at times and then be mildly depressed after.
I’m currently on Vraylar and Zoloft, they seem to work wonders for me, even though I think I’m due for a med adjustment on Vraylar, I’m having psychotic breakthrough symptoms. Just waiting for prior authorization to go through.

The medication stabilizes my mood, makes me less sensitive to things. That is, after all how antipsychotics work, by producing apathy. They really are good at doing what theyre supposed to, which is making you feel not disturbed by changes in your environment.

Coming off antipsychotics I feel uncomfortable, emotionally unstable. Hypersensitive to the point where I can’t enjoy the little things.

After taking 200mg of Seroquel I can calm down and sort of enjoy things better, I think due to its actions on norepinephrine release.

i feel like abilify helped to blunt my response to negative stimuli a little. i still react strongly but not as violently as i did before and it no longer throws me into a severe mood swing EVERY time

I don’t notice mood changes due to meds but Latuda is supposed to have antidepressant properties so maybe that’s why I’ve generally been happy all year rather than falling into any depressive spells due to the shock of the illness.

Yes, Consta makes you totally emotionally flat. Especially with me, negative and very sad stimuli has absolutely no effect upon me. Things like deaths of loved ones have no effect upon me. No tears, no sad feelings, nada. Just flat.

Emotion wise:

Pre paliperidone: Bad anxiety, Flat affect.

Since being on it: Anxiety reduced. Flat affect gone ( I am much more animated)
