Georgia school brings back paddling to punish students--when parents give consent

Currently 19 states have laws permitting corporal punishment (paddling) in schools. Parental consent is required for a child to be paddled. A child whose parents do not consent to paddling receive a suspension in lieu of paddling.

What are your thoughts regarding the paddling of students?

I got paddled for forgetting to bring my gym shorts to school. Except for the sz I turned out alright

When I was coming up nobody asked for permission. We just got paddled.

Old school

don’t think I support it. just suspend them.

I went to a middle school in GA where they allowed paddling with parental consent.

Honestly,

It didn’t happen very often so I didn’t think about it much.

I was whipped with a leather belt on my bare bottom several times as a child and given the strap in school, I’m against it as some people don’t know moderation. I had welts and would bleed

I’m against it.

Science says harsh punishment is ineffective or counterproductive.

Parents might consent to this because they can’t take time off work to stay home with a suspended kid.

I believe that paddling teaches students that violence is the way to resolve conflicts. Not good.

My mom told the school that it was just fine to spank me. We had a teacher with holes drilled 8n her paddle so it hurt more. I still hate my mother for that. She didn’t care about bruises or welts.

No teacher will ever get permission to hit my kids.

I’ve heard about paddles with holes Ouch

My dad spanked me. Just suspend them?

My daughter’s school encourages druggies to come to class stoned so they can either flail around because they’re so far behind the other kids or they disrupt everything because they’re so high they’re psychotic. It’s all about making sure the one uber low performing kid gets support, not the 20 other kids who might actually have a future.

We do a lot of work with her at home to repair the damage.

Harsh punishment like this is usually seen as unjust by children. It is not internalized. You do not teach children that what they did was wrong, you teach them not to get caught doing it. In addition, you teach them fear and aggression.

I’m against physical punishment especially in our schools.
It doesn’t help in the long run.
