So many times a cousin match that has surnames I’m interested in checking out has a private tree.More than 50% of the time I approach someone for permission to view their tree they can’t be bothered to reply.
Yea for most people i think genealogy tests are probably a one and done situation. Your request might be getting lost in their emails because of them assuming it’s spam mail from the genealogy test company or something. It sounds like a cool hobby tho. I know almost nothing about my genealogy
That would explain some of it. More and more people are opting to make their trees private. I can understand people having private trees for research purposes, but not just having one tree that then they choose to make private.
I see hmmm. 4774747
Being frustrating is what makes a hobby more enjoyable because then the successes mean something.
It’s been ages since I’ve had any successes.
Man, you should be a photographer then.

I’ve hardly added anyone new to my tree for over 6 years. That being due to a major blunder on my part that had me naively adding people to my tree via My heritage’s ‘smart matches’. Quite a lot of it turned out to be crap, requiring the need to get rid of it - while not inadvertently removing people who are genuine ancestors.
I get frustrated a lot but interesting things do happen. The following could be filed under 'Is it coincidental or not? Among my yDNA(father-son-son-son etc) matches I have Dutton. I’ve wondered about my connection to Dutton for a good number of years Yesterday I came across Thomas Dutton who died in Exeter St Sidwell. Exeter St Sidwell being where several people with a variant spelling of my surname lived.
His daughter was the 1st cousin of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. My father was a model railway enthusiast , and had many books about the GWR (Great Western Railway) . Brunel did quite a lot of work for the GWR. My father would’ve been fascinated by this.
I wish there were better distinctions on Ancestry between the different ethnic groups from the U.K. and people from Germany and France. I just find it kind of obnoxious that my test estimates that I’m 44% from “England and Northwestern Europe.” I think it confuses my Irish and Welsh with England, and also my German and French heritage.
I was able to verify a lot of relatives going quite a ways back, by different DNA tests I’ve had, because I matched those cousins with the same ancestors through DNA. It told their ancestors in common with me.
This is reckoned to be good
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMDbU72_-Ms Ideally you need a good amount of matches in the 90- 400 cMs. Unfortunately for me I only have 8 such matches.
I agree. In my church, it’s vital to learn about ancestors and explore the plethora of stories. However, i still get frustrated at my paternal side, definitely when someone puts data that is incorrect. I ended up emailing the guy who’s done the most work on it other than great-uncle who was very, very well researched. It was my 7th cousin once removed if I’m remember it correctly. I have found that FamilySearch is better than most of the others because it’s free, and has virtually everything thing Ancestry has. They work together a lot, too.
