Geek vs nerd

Continuing the discussion from The Big Bang Theory is a plague on society – we should rejoice in its overdue end:

Can someone explain the difference. Are there strict criteria for geekdom/nerddom?
Or is it something you self appoint yourself as being or other people label you ie “There goes that geek/nerd” ?

I probably qualify as both. A geek is someone who is fanatically obsessed with something in particular. You can be a Star Trek geek, a model train geek, a comics geek, etc. A nerd is someone who has an academic or technical bent. An A student, software engineer, scientist, etc.

Make sense?

Boiled down, a geek is someone with particular interests and hobbies that they’re good at, a nerd is someone who is good at science and things “regular” people don’t understand.

There tends to be a fair amount of crossover between the two as well.

I suppose my interest/obsession with finding and posting mental health stuff is slightly geeky. Also my interest in autism and non-verbal learning disorder. Pretentious? Maybe at times.

Introvert and socially inept?- yes. Interested in knowledge though not specifically ‘academics’ . Intellectually a ‘spiky profile’ type ie very clever in some ways but rather dumb in others.

Not much common sense which apparently goes with high intellect(or so they say).
