According to the study, published in JAMA Cardiology and led by researchers at Harvard, blood pressure readings measured while lying down were significantly better at indicating risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart failure, and death than were seated blood pressure readings alone.
Interestingly, rarely do they check while lying down, always while seated.
im on blood pressure meds 2 years now
I think Drs have known this for a long time but take our blood pressure sitting up as a convenience to the nurses or other staff.
Way back in 1993 when I was pregnant with my oldest son I developed high blood pressure. It can be a dangerous condition to have during pregnancy and the Drs had me come in repeatedly for blood pressure checks. Anyway, my doctor would check my blood pressure always while I was lying down. He insisted that he was getting more accurate readings that way. I really liked that doctor because I felt that he was taking his job seriously and not treating patients like numbers.
That’s interesting.
I will first make the most annoying sound in the world. Then i will take your blood pressure ![]()
That’s really eye-opening. It’s surprising how something as routine as a blood pressure reading could be done in a way that misses key health risks. Research like this shows how much we still have to learn about even the most basic medical practices.
