Tell us about it … fifteen
complex PTSD is linked to a series of events that caused trauma where regular PTSD is linked to one event.
thank you.
I never heard of it til today.
I think mine is more like one event.
I have cptsd from repeated exposure to domestic violence as a kid
It is not yet in the DSM, but many psychiatrists are petitioning to get it added. The reasoning goes, long-term exposure to trauma during developmental years has a very clear and distinct impact on brain development. This leads to changes in behavior and thought proccessing that end up being diagnosed as borderline, narcissism, bipolar, depression, ADHD, etc but the treatments are generally not effective for these individuals because they don’t address the root cause of the issues. Many pdocs use C-PTSD as an informal diagnosis now to indicate to the treatment team that this person needs therapy to help them process trauma, not just behavioral management or medication.
another thing might be disassociation.
Yeah. The general thing my pdoc says is that anyone with alphabet soup diagnoses would usually be better served by a single diagnosis of C-PTSD. Like I have been diagnosed with PTSD, ADHD, OCD, GAD, MDD, Psychosis NOS, SZ, and SZA at various times. But all my symptoms seem to be linked to repeated trauma as a child, and the way my brain developed because of it.
that’s hard to hear.
I’ve read somewhere
the brain doesn’t stop developing til around age 20.
Yeah, around age 20-25 for most people.
I have c-ptsd. It just means you have been traumatized on more than one occasion. Some of my traumas happened in childhood, some of them as an adult. It makes it harder to tease them apart I guess
Wow.
I have never heard of CPTSD.
Thanks for bringing up the topic!
So would it be fair to say that many personality disorders appear to be different presentations of C-PTSD?
My root traumas all happened at around ages 11-14. The stuff that really I think about and have blame and it affects me still to this day. And it’s hard to let go cuz I was so young and it blindsided me really badly and caused many mental neurosis’s.
But that all lead to
what happened to me at 19 and in subsequent years was much more difficult and painful. Although I was older. I dunno if that makes it easier or maybe even worse… anyways Thanks for your post.
I mean, it probably depends on the person. But current psychiatry tends to focus directly on the symptoms and not on the cause. Lookong at both together would probably give better insight in how to treat patients.
Very fair. Psychiatry is still just a baby. I’d love to see how different treatments might be 100 years from now.
I can relate @Jonnybegood . My earliest trauma was probably around 11. Then I had another one in my late teens, and then the biggie at 36 when I broke my neck. I was such a â– â– â– â– â– â– â– mess for years while I tried to deal with all these memories
Cheers
I’m “liking” to show support, not cuz you broke your neck and bad ■■■■happened. Take care dcragg65
At first, they put me in a group therapy session. But my emotions were explosive at the time. Everyone else’s trauma was 20 or 30 years old, but I was living it full blown at the time.
Then a few years seeing a neuropsych, who specializes in head injury. She helped me a lot, a lot of it just in her kindness
Thanks @Jonnybegood much appreciated
