Fear Mongering around ChatGBT and AI

That is awful. You may not know or understand, but AI steals the art of artists to generate AI art.

Iā€™m not saying its going to be easy. It will create many issues for some. It will likely create opportunities for others.

And I am in no way belittling the struggles of those it will affect. I just donā€™t fear it. I think society as a whole will adjust, just like we have in the past.

If I was in affected field. I might have a different attitude, however.

So I understand where you are coming from.

My view though, is changes like this happen, you canā€™t stop it. Things evolve and progress. Itā€™s inevitable and I try not to fear it.

(edit) I appear to be on a roll deleting apparently unappreciated posts. There should be an honor roll for that. Off to watch TV in an attempt to encourage myself to truly give up this time. (/edit)

There will always be new opportunities. Some people are good at spotting them and creating a business around them.

Itā€™s a well known quote from Darwin that not the biggest or smartest survives but the one that is most nimble to changing circumstances.

I agree with you. There is nothing to fear. Already using it in trading stocks. Though it provides terrible strategies, but programming is a need in order to trade stocks. And, while eventually I have to analyze things using my brain, it does the programming for me. I havenā€™t learnt programming a lot, but I can operate something that does it for me.

I think this is revolutionary. Just like computers. This is the future. AI, even better than chatgpt, will arrive and improve human performance and productivity. We are at a threshold here: It is nothing short of the invention of electricity. AI is here to change the world.

I understand it now. I am also a digital artist who used to make my own covers by hand, i didnā€™t realize what AI art was doing really until very recently.

Completely agree. Itā€™s not a pleasant fact that AI may cost people jobs in certain areas. Itā€™s not something you should not have sympathy for.

But 90% of colonial Americans were farmers, for example. Iā€™m sure people were resistant to change in occupation then as well. Before farming people were hunter gatherers. Before the internet people printed more books. Evolution in technology always happens. The jobs people do constantly changes throughout history.

Anyway, Iā€™m not sure I had the best examples in the above paragraph. Dont want to spend ages on this post so just going with the first things that pop into my mind.

If AI is stealing peoples art and such, this is something new laws need to address, IMO.

The issues can all be solved over time, IMO. Individuals may be damaged by it, but I am trying to look at the big picture here. In the end, I think it will be beneficial to mankind on the whole.

This has already been happening. If you look in comparison to the 60s most of those jobs were replaced with computers. It will keep happening the more technology advances but i donā€™t think its anything to fear.

Yes, it is a cost-benefit analysis. However, a lot more benefit than costs!!

Programmers are smart people. If it can replace 50 percent of the programmers, then they also lose their jobs. So, these people will adjust in other roles where they can out-compete the machines. That inevitably happens. New opportunities arise when old ones fade.

Eventually, when machines do all the work for humans, we become philosopher kings, that is, both kings and philosophers. Kings because we wonā€™t have to work and philosophers because we will debate how to distribute the resources produced by machines.

Your thoughts are similar to what I was thinking about with the farmer thing just now as well. People used to work long days just to feed themselves. Things have greatly improved since then. There is now more time for leisure.

I completely agree with you. The potential for great strides if things are handled right are huge. Like any technology, there is always the possibility for abuse however.

Yes, we were tribes, then farmers, then came the age of industry and technology. So, nothing to worry.

Prompt to DALL-E:

ā€œGenerate a painting of animals playing in the style of Hieronymus Boschā€™s garden of earthly delights with oil paint on oak panels.ā€

Results:

That is some pretty good mimicry of Boschā€™s style. So much so that you wouldnā€™t need to hire him for a new work if he were alive today.

I donā€™t know enough to say if AI is going to take away a lot of jobs, but if it is they might think about supporting a universal basic income. We have the ability to match the money we put out with goods and services. The problem in the future is going to be financing consumption. Weā€™ll be able to produce so much more, but who will be able to buy it? One job of the future might be a comprehensive physical trainer, who is able to take multiple readings from computers and sensors on what is going on in the traineeā€™s body and come up with programs to maximize the results from working out. Just a thought.

Well. Look what my Facebook feed is full of this week:

Tonnes of ads from companies who want to charge you for helping you use free generative AI products like ChatGPT. LOL.
