I think it’s a legitimate regional adaptation, but you are correct that the North American practice horrifies Italians. They also don’t understand how we can drink lattes in the morning - to them it’s too much dairy too early in the day.
You can absolutely serve meatballs alongside pasta.

Carbonara is very comforting, I also like to make what I call my ossobuco pasta sauce, which is almost like bolognese but with veal shanks instead of minced meat, I love having it blipping away for 5 hours on a rainy day.
