This is really interesting and strange because I became extremely one eye dominate weird feeling to describe since you use both eyes but it was kind of like I had one eye that was always hyper vigilant.
Interesting to think that abnormalities in lateralization can be a foundational issue in scz
From GTP
In schizophrenia, this typical pattern of brain lateralization can be altered:
- Language Lateralization: Typically, the left hemisphere is dominant for language processing. However, some neuroimaging studies have found a lack of the usual left-hemisphere dominance for language tasks in individuals with schizophrenia. This may manifest as reduced activation in the left hemisphere or increased activation in the right hemisphere during language tasks. Some studies also suggest that abnormal lateralization may be related to specific symptoms like auditory hallucinations - voices may be experienced when the language centers in the right hemisphere become overly active.
- Hemispheric Asymmetry: In neurotypical brains, there are structural asymmetries between the left and right hemispheres, such as the planum temporale, an area involved in language processing, being larger in the left hemisphere in most right-handed individuals. However, this and other structural asymmetries may be reduced or reversed in some individuals with schizophrenia.
- Handedness: Most people are right-handed, reflecting left-hemisphere dominance for motor control. However, some studies have found a higher rate of mixed-handedness or left-handedness among individuals with schizophrenia, suggesting possible alterations in the usual patterns of motor lateralization. It should be noted, though, that findings in this area are somewhat inconsistent.
- Connectivity and Integration: The corpus callosum, the main communication route between the two brain hemispheres, may be altered in schizophrenia, affecting the balance and integration of information between the hemispheres. This could lead to disruptions in the typical lateralization patterns.
