So I met with my psychiatrist today, and I asked to be put on Geodon after he explained what it’s like. He trusts my dad and I immensely and allows us a lot of versatility with medication.
So, the question I have is this: what are your experiences with the antipsychotic Geodon? This would be my third antipsychotic I’m on, as now it would augment haldol and caplyta.
I have been on 3 antipsychotics at once and was for many years in a government run clinic. Now I take 2, Rexulti and olanzapine odt.
I have also been on geodon in the past while in a state hospital. They put me on it. It made me wicked tired for a period after I took it and it didn’t help me. Plus I had to eat I think 500 calories with each dose. They even gave me much higher than the FDA recommended highest dose because, ■■■■ you’re in a state hospital, what else can you really do?
I hope it works for you though. Best wishes to you.
I used geodon on its own, and also combined with gabapentin. I adore geodon. My doc took me off after about a decade due to what he thought was tardive dyskinesia, but actually turned out to be a brain tumor causing nerve malfunction. TD is a risk with any med, but fairly low with geodon. I liked that it was weight neutral, and not super sedating. I needed to get a yearly EKG while I was on it, because it carries a risk of prolonged QT syndrome, but I never developed that.
Yes, @Ninjastar, my psychiatrist told us about that possible side effect, though, I’m not too worried as I have a very healthy heart by all metrics. Thank you for the response.
I’ve been on Geodon for 21 years from the max dose to now 60 mg’s. It is known for a high propensity to cause QT prolongation, but I never developed that, but I did develop a Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB) a few years ago. All the cardiologists I have seen over the years are so far not too worried even though it seems to be progressing.
My pdoc and pharmacist would like to see me switch to another AP that is less toxic to the heart than Geodon. Geodon needs to be taken with food that is at least 350 calories for it to be effective.
Geodon didnt work at all for me. It was like taking nothing. Maybe even worse. I ended up fighting the police and locked up in the state institution on geodon.
Don’t listen too much to our experiences. Try it if your doctor is okay with it. Our experiences will not be the same as yours. I had a super bad experience but won’t share because I don’t want it to negatively affect you decision. Other people like it. Just try it and see how it goes.
I’m going to write a review to you about my journey of taking Ziprasidone- Geodon-Zeldox for 20 years.
Let me just say that if you take a sudden antipsychotics for a period greater than a decade it will get almost impossible to get off again because of very bad withdrawal symptoms. It may take one month per year you have been taking the antipsychotics befor you get rid of all the withdrawal symptoms and the drug.
So I was on 240 mg Geodon with the 2 other antipsychotics Clopixol depot(like Haldol) and Seroquel.
Did it work for positives?
Sure it really worked for that aspect.
Did it work for negatives.
Sure it did.
It amped me to the moon and back again. It made me so addicted to music that I lived on nodes and loud music. My nabours tried 5 times to through me out of my apartment because of noise. It made me a very active Guy on this forum.
Geodon made my anger very bad.
Geodon made food tasteless so I lost 40 pounds of body weight.
Do I recommend Ziprasidone!!
If you are not the angry type like I was.
And you lack energy then go for it.
Else do not go for it.
Do I recommend 3 antipsychotics. Yes I do but I prefere being on two antipsychotics at the same time.
My current meds on now are Clopixol depot 500 mgs every 3 week and Qutiapine (Seroquel ir) 800 mg by mouth.
Do I like those two antipsychotics?
Yes they take care of my psychosis and anger issues and don’t amp me.
