Experience with alpha or beta blockers (prazosin, propranolol)?

I have issues with my fight or flight response, most of the time I have attacks of intense fear. My intrusive thoughts seem to stem from this. Benzos seem to work in a roundabout sort of way for this anxiety but I feel like prazosin or propranolol might work the same or even better with less addiction potential. Any experience with these meds would be appreciated.

I was given beta blockers for anxiety for a while, all it did was make me dizzy a lot, so for example if I stood up too quick I’d fall over

I used to take propranolol, but for tachycardia, not for anxiety. It was good in that respect. There are 10mg or 40mg formulations in my country. My doc told me to take a 10mg pill three times a day.
It’s easy to come off, no withdrawals.

I just got off propranolol, it made me very agitated, foggy, and exhausted. Worst med i’ve been on thus far

I didn’t know that beta blockers could be used for anxiety. I’m not sure that it’s a good idea. It can lower blood pressure and your heart beat and can have various effects on the heart.

I once have been taken beta blockers but it was for tachycardia and arrhythmia.

A side effect of beta blockers is that they not only decrease heart rate, but also blood pressure. Thus when you stand up the flux of blood to your brain suddenly decreases, resulting in dizziness and sometimes even fainting.

I’ve been taking prazosin for awhile now and I highly recommend it for vivid dreams causing you to lose sleep. I just started taking propranolol instead of metroprolol for high blood pressure with the added benefits of it having wanted psychiatric side effects such as lower anxiety and possibly increased confidence in decision making for ocd/sz patients. The jury is still out on this one, but no bad side effects so far, it’s been about a month. (blood pressure is fine)

Yes it is called orthostatic hypotension. I used to have that a lot when I was sick.

A bit off-topic but @eduvigis do you take Prozasin? How is your sleep on it?

Originally given propranolol for akasthesia but it helps in lowering my anxiety, in a preventative kind of way. It doesnt have immediate calming effect like benzos, but it does help and its possible it has affected my OCD symptoms too. Pdoc has me on 25 mg 5 times a day. I have slightly high bp but i do get dizziness however that could be from a number of my meds. I highly recommend propranolol

I take propranolol. It helps me a lot with anxiety. Unfortunately, it seems to cause me digestive issues (or rather, the pill substrate probably does, so my pdoc says). So, I don’t take it as much anymore. It is not addictive as far as I can tell.

Did u gain weight on it?

My father-in-law used to have lots of panic attacks until he went on beta blockers.

I take a Beta Blocker.
It’s for my high blood pressure and faster heart rate.
It’s called Metoprolol Succinate.
It also keeps me chill most of the time.

I am on propranolol10mg, twice daily, as needed for anxiety induced tremors. It has helped quite a bit. Just this last week I started taking one on a schedule each day (instead of waiting until after the tremors start).

I did gain weight at a time when I was taking propranolol, but weight gaining had already started before, and I think my AP and my AD were the culprits.
