Beta blocker for anxiety?

What’s your opinion/experience with this?

My doctor is out of town and I’m having some serious issues,

Some super flaky assistant forgot to give him my message DAYS ago and so the office had to ask an NP that’s never seen me before for medication,

She prescribed a beta blocker to take 3x daily, which is not what the doctor and I discussed.

I don’t want it, I don’t want to take more medication daily.

I take this as needed once a day for restlessness. I’m prescribed 10 mg.

I was put on one for SVT’s (basically a racing heart). Psychiatrist mentioned it would probably help with my anxiety. Well it does help with the physical symptoms of anxiety, so yeah it helped me a lot.

Didn’t do much for my anxiety, mainly just made me dizzy when standing up

Does it work?

They want me to take 10mg 3x daily, indefinitely.

I feel like that’s a lot.

Yes it works but makes me tired!

I used propranolol for benzo withdrawal which real talk is a godsend. I feel like 3x a day is almost 1 pill too many. It can make you moody tho so be warned.

What’s your stance on benzodiazepines tho? These days I’m rx’d as needed but for about 5 years in my early 20s I was on Xanax or Ativan for about 4x daily. It really helped but it can cause u to get depressed, a little careless, and after years you need to up the dosage.

I know you don’t want to add another pill so I wanted to ask you how your abilify is working. Do you think it could be the cause for your anxiety being intense or atleast more than usual?

Yeah,

I’m pretty sure the abilify is making me feel weird,

But I’m not throwing it out just yet.

I don’t really have any feelings either way with benzos, don’t like them, don’t not like them.

We’ll see how this works out and I’ll probs end up getting a benzo anyway because that’s what I’m more familiar with,

You know?

Benzo withdrawal is absolutely not a joke, happy this stuff helped you in your time of need.

Yea it’s honestly nothing to be afraid of if u have a beta blocker and Benadryl. Perhaps a little gabapentin too to take the edge off. Lmao that’s not much at all… jk

Have u ever thought of vistaril? Maybe on top of a benzo as needed?

And what were u on before abilify? Why’d u switch?

I wasn’t medicated before,

Not for a few years.

I’m one of those that gets afraid of the medication after a few months…

Wow u must not have sz ‘that’ bad if you were able to work and stuff all unmedicated. I don’t mean to discount the illness I mean it as a badge of honor.

Not to be annoying but what was the impetus to starting a medication?

And no wonder you always look so jovial in the pics you post!

I was not going okay any of those years,

And I’m pretty much always stoned to account for the pictures…

And the reason I started the meds again was because last year this time, I was in the hospital.

This is a strange time for me so I decided I didn’t want that to happen again and took a preemptive strike.

So dont take it. I took propranolol but for different reasons. It didnt do anything for anxiety. They slow ur heart rate down, theyre given to people with high blood pressure. I wouldnt wanna take that stuff long term.

Plus i dont think they even help with mental aspect of anxiety. If u get physical anxiety symptoms such as hot flash or racing heart, thats what beta blockers help with. Kinda a placebo affect cuz u think ur still calm, but ur not. Try meditating for anxiety b4 u take meds is my tip.

This is pretty much exactly what I thought.

I worked in the medical field all through school and I just knew this was (■■■■■■■■).

Oh well, I’ll tell him I tried them and they didn’t work…
