I don’t know if just people with Apple products get these messages but I’m sure if you’re using Apple laptops or desktops or iPhones you occasionally get that little pop-up message sometimes on a website that says “So and so wants to use your location”, and you can click on ‘allow’ or ‘don’t allow’ or sometimes ‘allow once’. I never liked those popups, for some reason I’m a little leery of those places knowing my location, though sometimes it helps if your looking for directions somewhere like finding the nearest fast food joint or nearest gas station or something.
I noticed just about three weeks ago those little messages have changed and I don’t like it. Now they ask if “so and so” can access the camera on your phone. That seems like a bad idea to me but I notice that the places that use that message won’t let you go any further on their website if you don’t allow them access to your camera. Is there anyone else a little hesitant about allowing some strange organization access to your camera?
Yes. I don’t use websites if they want my camera. If I really truly need to be on that website, I go to the local library to use the public computer and do it from there.
It’s not just Apple. Some websites do this so they can optimize them self for you, for example some restaurants do this so they can show you location or prices near you.
I have apps that need access to my camera on Android.
I looked it up on google. Apparently, you only have to worry about allowing the apps access to your camera is if its a malicious website. That malicious site could access your camera and see what’s going on around you.
