My ears have been ringing since my symptoms began, at age 14 I’m now 25. When I took Abilify it seemed to help a bit with the ringing. But I also get muscle pain from Abilify and stiff joints etc. I’m tired of my back hurting and I’m trying to lose weight. I started Strattera and the ringing just got sooo much worse. I stopped taking Strattera. I took Clonidine and the ear ringing stopped.
Should I ask for Clonidine?"
Clonidine (trade names Catapres, Kapvay, Nexiclon and others) is a sympatholytic medication used to treat high blood pressure, ADHD, anxiety/panic disorder, and certain pain conditions. It is classified as a centrally acting α2 adrenergic agonist. An alternative hypothesis that has been proposed is that clonidine acts centrally as an imidazoline receptor agonist.*
It helped relax me, and also knocked me out.
So has anyone found a medication or supplement that helps with ears ringing? It’s like a migraine, or a constant sharp frequency in the back of my head that I can hear and feel in my eardrums.
Sometimes dehydration is the cause, but acupuncture helps and the herbs they gave me helped out a lot. They’re called six herb tea pills and u can find em in Chinese shops or online, I found a site to show you what they are: www.far-east-ginseng.stores.yahoo.net/sixfateapili.html
Let me know if that link doesn’t work. Hope that helps!
So if that link doesn’t work either I pasted the name of it below its only $6.50 for 200 pills. But u do take 24 each day. It’s herbs boiled into tea and boiled way down and formed into tiny balls that u take either 8 3x or 12 2x a day.

Could you try a lower dose of Clonidine then what you were previously on so that it doesn’t knock you out. Or take at bedtime. Do you have high blood pressure? My ears ring when my blood pressure or blood sugar is low. Your doctor should be able to help you determine if blood pressure is causing it.
IDk what’s causing it, and I think doctors completely ignored me on it and said they didn’t know what it was. I’ve tried to get help from a regular doctor or general practitionar and they acted like it was a made up or foreign illness with no cure just like my diagnosis.
Sounds like tinnitus. I have it too, it sounds like a twinkly high pitched static. Mine tends to get worse when my other symptoms get worse like you described.
I have a theory about how it works. Basically as SZ, we are a LOT more aware of our environment and our senses don’t have a filter and we end up getting bombarded by a lot of raw sensory data. So this noise doesn’t get filtered and thus we hear it. It’s like turning up a speaker’s volume until you hear some static/noise. Same goes for vision; do you ever see a lot of very fine static in your vision? Same effect.
So anything that reduces the strength of your senses should work (antipsycotics or benzos come to mind).
BTW, the more you think about it the stronger it gets because your brain thinks it’s important and reinforces it’s ability to bypass the filter. So try to distract yourself with some music or a device that makes ambient noise like a fan. I always have a fan on while I sleep or I end up focusing on it.
When its quit I hear my ears ring. Its for a common reason. Playing music too loud. All musicians have it and it never goes away. Since yours started at 14 its probably for a different reason.
