Does Abilify keep you awake?

Since switching to Abilify from Zyprexa, I have had trouble sleeping. I didn’t sleep last night and today it felt like I haven’t slept but a stimulant was keeping me awake. It’s like I drank a lot of coffee.

I went to bed at 6pm and got up at 9pm. It no longer feels like coffee is keeping me awake.

Have you had this problem?

A lot of antipsychotic have insomnia as a side effect

It didn’t for me. In fact I sleep better on Abilify than Risperdal or Latuda.

Abilify wired me up, I was only sleeping for 4 hours a night. Lack of sleep ended badly and I had to try something else.

The Abilify has been a good drug for me. My blood sugar is down (diabetes), I’m losing weight, my anxiety is gone, and my mood swings are gone, especially feeling down and wanting to drink (alcoholic). So I’m trying to avoid switching from it.

I take Abilify 20mg. I use Vistaril and L-theanine to help me sleep.

Zyprexa is known for sedating effects.

Abilify is known for activating effects.

I found it too activating. My anxiety and agitation went through the roof and unfortunately I had to switch yet again

It may go away after a while, but I stayed with it for a few months and it didn’t get any better

I am on an injectable form of Abilify called Aristada for about 3 years now and have been on various forms of Abilify for many years with the exception of a 4 year period while I was incarcerated. While I do struggle with considerable insomnia, I can almost guarantee that, for me, the insomnia is due to the neurochemical imbalance (I have been that way most of my life and have SZA, so there is a serious mood stabilization aspect to what I live with). Do you or can you have an exercise regimen and stay away from ALL stimulants, including nicotine? Those two avoidances are miracles for me… When I disregard them all bets are off sleep-wise. The one exception is nicotine and that’s only if I maintain the heavy exercise routine, but either way I definitely notice the impact of the nicotine on my ability to maintain a longer-term sleep schedule. Good luck to you  Not sleeping sure is not fun.
