I don’t really care for chit chat but some do. I prefer they just be professional, bring my order correct, and refill my drink when it needs it. I usually tip 20%, I don’t add extra for personality.
one time when I was wait staffing, a guy left me extra money to go see
When Harry Met Sally. He was dining alone, and we really got into conversation.
cool story.
I don’t go to restaurants much, but unless it’s food delivery, I prefer service workers who are friendly and chit chat, instead of just throwing your change at you.
Just bring my food and refills quietly and disappear, please.
Well I knew who was holding hands, and getting all this our night out.
Come on Pixel.
people in WV are friendly as a culture. I like a friendly waiter
I hate that they feel the need to perform friendliness, because their wages depend on it. I always tip about 23% regardless of service, because I don’t think someone’s earnings should depend on their social skills or whether or not they’re having a rough day.
Tipping is a part of the bill here, so I’ve never had to calculate tips and such.
But if I were to do that, I wouldn’t tip less for not being chatty, I would tip less for being rude.
Poor social skills I can understand, same with being too busy to have time to chit-chat.
But straight out ignoring costumers, sneering at them or being condescending, that would cause me to tip less, not gonna lie.
Shitty day or not, they should treat people with basic respect.
If they don’t want a job where they have to face people, maybe waitering isn’t the right job for them.
Yeah my dad, sis and I went to the Brazilian restaurant the other day and the guy who’s usually very nice just had this look on his face. You could tell he was irritated with us. I thought it was funny . Like,”Oh. He’s so pissed at us!” I kept telling my dad,” He’s so irritated with us.” My dad’s like ,”no.” I’m laughing like,”OMG. He hates us.” But yeah unless the service is really bad we leave a tip.
@Pikasaur. Some of the rudest people I’ve ever met worked in the customer sales and service department at the company I used to work at. They would hang up on customers or even talk to them so rudely.
I worked for that company almost 12 years and I think I may have hung up on two maybe 3 customers. It was legitimate though. I wouldn’t hang up on someone unless they were really abusive and I’d warn them first. I mean they had to be really bad.
It’s a shame that the tips generally aren’t shared with kitchen staff who also make a pauper’s wage.
you’re wrong about bars, they do, they have to give the bartender his cut.
Yeah. One of us does, and it takes the pressure off of me.
As long as they mean well, are friendly with a friendly smile I’m good. They don’t need to do loads of chit chat
I always tip 20%,
More if the service was exceptional.
I’ve waited tables before and it can be miserable,
People in the service industry deserve more money.
At AT&T we were required to give three warnings before we could end the call without breaching company policy. If someone was just screaming into the phone because someone in the company screwed up I was very patient or I would put them on hold for a few minutes which 9 times out of ten would be all they needed to calm down. If someone was being a dick even after they got everything they wanted and were still being abusive those three warnings came very quickly.
Of my years of working there I only got one unprofessional QA report and that was when the sza was getting bad. Most people were good though.
I totally agree with you @shutterbug.
Deliver the food quietly then disappear!
I don’t like chit chat either, but I do like a smile
Yeah I guess I do too.
Being nice is also important.
Friendly but not chatty is what I like.
