I’ve never heard of a doctor talk about the side effects of any medicine. Antipsychotic or otherwise. I wonder how many people actually die because they are unaware that their medicine has side effects. Like antidepressants causing suicidal ideation.
I have an elderly relative who has to take a new medicine (not an AP). They read the leaflet that came with a previous medication and decided against it due to side effects.
Lol, she hasn’t ever gone over the long list that comes with the prescription, but she always goes over the major ones and the most common ones. I’m really happy with my pdoc. I feel like she actually cares about my well being, whereas my therapist (before I stopped going) made me feel like he had better things to be doing.
My pdoc told me that Abilify can give me akathisia. She never said anything about other side effects. As it is I currently have a tick under my left eye and like always when this happens I fear TD.
In the beginning, my doctor didnt’ tell me about the side effects, but I felt so shitty that I pushed and finally he recognised that the effects were a nightmare (for me). At first, I even asked him if I’d felt any side effects, he denied it. I was bad then, so I honestly don’t regret it, but now I think that doctors should be willing to explain that APs are poison unless the person is suffering severe psychosis.
They prescribed me something and it felt like my intestines were slipping out of my butt. No one ever mentioned this could happen and well, I honestly didn’t think a med could do that. But luckily I mentioned it and it turned out it was the beginning of a life threatening adverse reaction.
I can’t remember what it was called and my intestines didn’t actually slip out, but it sure felt weird. Like I was turning inside out.
My doctors talk about dangerous side effects - call me if… sorts of things - but they don’t volunteer information about simply annoying ones. They do listen to me and discuss if I bring them up, though.
I suspect it’s at least partially deliberate. The placebo effect is real, and if I think a drug might give me headaches, make me restless, make it hard to sleep, then there’s a pretty good chance those things will happen.
I’ve seen it happen here, too, with users hearing that a side effect is possible and then a day or two later insisting that they have that side effect and that it’s suddenly intolerable. Unless it’s a dangerous side effect, I tend to agree with the policy of not mentioning it.
My doctor sometimes recommends medications and prescribes a low dosage for about 2 weeks to see how it goes. If I ask what are the side effects he would tell me. As of yet none of the new meds. have worked for me. I just email my doctor if I have any trouble.
To me it’s just so bizarre and disgusting. Some of them act like such scumbags. They say oh this drug is real light don’t worry about it. Then I get nightmarish side effects. And now like somebody knocked sense into his head he finally starts going over the long list of damn side effects. Oh you must’ve gotten this one. Really?
My pdoc actually goes over all the side effects with me, and gives me usually a 3 page manual on the meds… even though I don’t actually read it, but I guess it’s nice that she’s so concerned…
Gonna have to bring the eye thing up with my pdoc then. Although I am on a low dose of Olanzapine now, I first had signs of movement disorders while on Haldol.
