They might knock off some but so does Sz unmedicated. Even more even.

they are strong tranquilizers

I don’t know about 20 years to be exact but yes the meds were on shave off a bunch of years to our lives.

Which do you prefer. See how long you can function with little or no sleep or see how long you can go with some nightly sleep.

you have to factor in that suicides skew those results.

but yea there is a trend of death at earlier age :frowning:

we have to fight to reduce that risk

i smoke drink and take meds, i will make it 2 60

I always thought us SZ’s had a lower life expentancy because statistically were more likely to smoke , drink, do drugs etc to “manage” our symptoms.

I doubt its the meds were prescribed.

Yes meds shorten lifespan bcz they cause negative symotoms. But life is much shorter without meds, suicide, homicide, etc

Hmmmm, I think you may be right about this! I know some schizophrenics who have made it to their 80s and 90s.

Yeah, from what I’ve heard its the habits of sz’s that shorten life expectancy, not the AP’s. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/demystifying-psychiatry/201602/why-do-people-schizophrenia-die-prematurely

To be honest, I think it’s the meds and the habits of individuals with schizophrenia that lead to shorter life expectancy. People who don’t have schizophrenia and abuse their body have a shorter life expectancy :woman_shrugging:. Sometimes it can depend on how well you take care of your body and also genetics!

As far as I know, medication tends to make people eat poorly and/or have metabolic issues which can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

It can be managed by eating well, but it is difficult (at least for me).

Still beats the hell out of being psychotic IMHO.

The medical people who are treating me often have had very little education about schizophrenia.

Ya know I see it like… It could be 20 years less of living life or being an empty shell tortured by voices. I guess its a big trade off. But I dont mind it. Now to answer your question. I think it was 10 years not really sure.

It’s because of those who leave early. Big percentage keeps the years down but we’ve better meds these days and those studies are in progress with our generation. I’d imagine you’d see a lot more information to the positive with the newer medications. We aren’t totally removed from the dark ages of psychiatry.

It’s like the difference between males and females for life expectancy. You lose more men earlier in car crashes and other risky behaviors so females usually have a better life expectancy in the modern world.

I reckon taking meds wouldnt help but then again neither would smoking or drinking/taking drugs, diet and lack of exercise plays a part too,

I stopped smoking over 10 yrs ago and i have been trying to do more exercise and eat better, I looked in the mirror last night and i have lost some weight and when the gym opens i want to trim up as much as i can.

who knows actually.

but living healthy lifestyle can beat a lot of nasty tricks.

i think the depression that comes along with sz is also a killer.

not only from suicides.
