Discerning tastes in movies/series

For years during recovery after my psychosis, I had a heck of a time watching TV/Movies. Felt like I couldn’t concentrate and just didn’t enjoy them. It took me a long time to get out of that rut. I started watching movies/series in segments and eventually progressed to the point where I could once again watch them in whole and get some enjoyment out of them.

However, I now feel like my tastes are very finicky. I can’t just watch anything and enjoy it. It takes a pretty special movie/series to really get my full attention. When I was younger, I could enjoy a vast array of films and whatnot. I somewhat miss that ability, since the range of things I enjoy is severely cut down on and there is not as much to choose from.

I’d also like to add a little bit of a rant about the volume of crime related shows on tv. Once in awhile it’s fine but it seems to just about dominate antennae tv, and it gets old.

What about you? Are you a picky watcher? Or do you enjoy almost anything?

For the most part over recent years I’ve only watched Marvel or horror movies. Recently though I’ve shaken it up with Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio on Netflix which was FANTASTIC, and also The Whale in theaters which was awesome as well.

I can’t do chick flicks and I don’t like comedies except for rare occasions. I’ll watch most anything else especially if it has an actor I like I guess.

Yeah in recent times I’ve become pretty picky with my entertainment. If I can’t get any knowledge or thrill from watching it I’ll most likely skip it.

I feel ya though on the crime shows. A lot of “murder porn” totally permeates the streaming services too and it’s pretty sucky.

Lately I’ve been sticking to documentaries. I like learning about things like my favorite musicians or certain cultures and history.

I struggle to watch TV series, movies are a little easier. Like you @Bowens, I’m pretty picky about what I watch as most of it can’t hold my attention.

I have a rating system now, which is the number of times I check my phone per hour while watching the series or movie. If it hits five, I usually turn it off.

Hey Pat!

Did you have a birthday, or cake day a few days ago?

I had a cake day, and got lots of happy cake day posts which were nice. Unrelated, my dad and niece made a cake for something to do and I had some cake on my cake day

I tend to like dark movies, like “The Black Dhalia” and “The Good German”. My taste regarding mafioso movies like “Scarface” and “Goodfellas” varies. One time I will like them, and the next time the bad guys bore me. I can get into sunny movies once in a while. I really liked “27 Dresses”, but I think that is the only romcom I’ve ever liked. I tend to like historical dramas. I liked a recent rendition of Dicken’s “Nicolas Nickleby”. I like to watch most renditions of “Jane Eyre”. I haven’t watched many versions of “Pride and Prejudice” but I suspect that I would like them. I like some of the old time classics, like “Inherit the Wind” and “Town without Pity”. I generally don’t like horror movies. I’m not going to pay good money for someone to scare the daylights out of me, but I do like a very dark movie titled “Angel Heart”.

I will watch all of the murder pr0n for you folks who can’t stand it. Also, let’s hear it for shows and movies with blood, breasts, and beasts (plot optional). Booyeah.

I liked the movie “Vanity Fair”, with Reese Witherspoon", in the lead. Her character intrigued me. I thought she was great in that movie.

I mostly can only watch old familiar movies or tv shows. I have no desire to follow a new story line.

Ill watch new tech shows tho. Like i watched the 4th matrix and also tenet. Those are visually and conceptually interesting but i still dont care for the story line.

Long ago i did a bit of acting/extra work, it kind of ruins movies lol, cuz then its like "oh those are extras, thats cgi thats a green screen etc… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I like a creepy/trashy serial killer show once in a while. I just try to be careful it’s not the only media I consume.

It’s hard for me to sit through a movie, especially in the theater. The last 4 or 5 times I went to the movies I couldn’t remember what I saw right after it ended. I was too busy focusing on the people around me. I don’t watch a lot of movies on TV; I had to watch several films for my classes, I sat through those OK. Watching 6 or 7 minute clips of movies on YouTube is about my speed. Been watching a lot of “The Cable Guy” clips lately, the ending scene is actually pretty sad.

I pay $150.00 for cable, phone, and internet. I also have a cellphone I get for free from the government. I went grocery shopping today and will need to go back in less than a week. I also have a credit card I need to pay the minimum balance on. I’ll have $200 left for food until next month. And I live on disability. I can sum up why I can’t work in one word: BURNOUT. It causes cognitive shutdown. I watched a crime show today and it had good actors. I like old American movies from the 1940’s best. I don’t get scared by many horror movies. I saw a famous guitarist say guitarists will do anything to have a decent guitar. I don’t have very good guitars and I wondered if I should charge a $300 guitar :guitar::notes:. I’m going to have a dentist bill to pay after my dental insurance pays for most of it. My mandolin is a very nice one, it cost around $300, and I like mandolin better.

A lot won’t hold my attention these days. I don’t know what happened. It wasn’t this bad over a year ago.

I have to focus on one series at a time…first, it was the Sopranos…now it’s Stranger Things…not too gory but high suspense…loving it…first season so far.
