Did anyone had success with academics once beeing diagnosed?

Hey guys, I´m going to start another degree this September.

But I´m afraid of not beeing able to live up to the expectations of studying a degree. The first one I got was really hard from my experience before my first episode.

I will try to study a bit every day but I´m not sure if that´s enough. I´m not used to daily lessons and study time each day. And it´s a very competitive field.

I studied Microcomputer Office Technology at a community college after my diagnosis, but, I never finished the program. I was one internship away from finishing before I quit. It was a very difficult program for me.

I have been studying Piano performance and composition for the last 13 and a half years now, continuously. It is going very slowly and laboriously as I don’t catch on very quickly. I struggle and struggle.

i had no luck with that kind of study
it made me have several hospital stays till after 12 yrs my work ethic eroded after a 288 day section in hospital
as well as not being able to comprehend, properly socialise, engage successfully with meaning - none of these

In 2010 I did an associate’s degree program in web development and design. It was very difficult to finish and when I didn’t get an internship i gave up. I wish i would have finished it. But i don’t think i could take the stress of the work. If everything isn’t exactly right, the product simply won’t work. There’s a lot of pressure creating stuff like that.

I got my aircraft mechanic licenses since being sick. I got an associates degree out of it but that was because I already had a bachelors and a masters before I got sick. Otherwise I would have just gotten two technical certificates. Still it was a lot of studying.

I go to a really good university full time. I do however do online classes to keep my stress low. I’m a good student. Don’t be afraid of using disability services while in school they help a lot of people.

what is disability service? I don´t want to spread the word that i´m sick.

What country are you in if you don’t mind me asking? I really only know about the services they have in the US but it may still apply to you. I don’t use it but I plan to in grad school. Basically you talk to your schools disability services and you get certain help with your courses. An example would be extra time on assignments. They don’t tell your professors what specific disabilities you have they just tell them what services you get through the program.

Thanks I will check that out. I´m from Europe and will be studying next year at the Netherlands.

No problem. I know it has helped a lot of people, and I’m probably going to use it before grad school to figure out what extra help I need before I get busier with school. I also really recommend taking what courses you can online, it keeps my stress and anxiety really low, but can get a little lonely.

I tried a home correspondence History A level course about 6 months after my first hospitalisation . It was a total failure. A few attempts were made to get me to try a college course in the last decade or so. Due to my quite strong phobia about a 3D academic setting ,due to past bullying, I steadfastly declined . An added factor to that was the realisation I had a learning difficulty I’d never had help for .

I’m studying sociology, starting December. I have had lowered cognitive function when I was a university student after I was diagnosed. I was always suicidal and psychotic. I ended up getting hospitalized 6 times and came home to recover from a mysterious illness.

Now I am clinically diagnosed with a genetic disorder so I’m coping with a new illness. It’s going ok so far- dealing with MD is hard enough. But my cognitive abilities are much more better now.

I tried going back to school and studying after I got sick. I think I did alright, my problem was quiting before I finished. I would miss a day or assignment. And I would think, man that’s it I won’t be able to pass this class anymore. It depends on the person. I think if you want to study and have the desire and discipline, nothing is impossible. My problem is that I need to have more self discipline and not quit…
