Crying over my deer friend

A few days ago, I saw a deer get hit by a car and I cried in the middle of the road. (Stay with me, it gets happier)

It was not just any deer, it was one of a family of deer that live in my neighborhood and that eat in my yard every morning.

Basically, I feel like not only are these deer the only neighbors I like, but my friends.

All four of them were crossing the road when some jackass pulled around doing far more than the 25mph he was allowed, the last deer darted across quickly, and the truck screeched to a halt. I involuntarily covered my eyes and started crying. Last thing I saw was the deer leaping over a fence and not quite clearing it, falling on the ground a couple times and limping off to the woods.

The guy in the truck got out to check his damage he looked at me and said with a smile “that was crazy”. Caressed his precious, non-dented bumper and drove off. Of course I wanted to punch his teeth down his throat, but I was already crying, and it was 7am, which is early for a stranger fight, even for me.

I’ve been broken up about this deer for days. Imagining its pain of slow death just inside the woods.

The happy part…

My deer friend lived! Just this very morning, right now, the family of deer are in my yard, all four of them. I thought, it can’t be him, he has to be dead. Nope, he has a gash in his leg (probably from the fence) and is favoring one side, but he’s ALIVE!

And the cut isn’t that bad. I’m starting to think the car didn’t even hit him at all. Maybe just scared him to where he couldn’t quite make it over the fence.

Anyway, I tried to snap a picture before they ran off…

If you’re too busy to read the story, here it is summarized in emojis:

Thank you!

Dude your deer are lucky. In my neck of the woods they are doing a cull of all the city deer. They say it’s too dangerous and they get hit by cars. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Thank you everyone!

I couldn’t be more excited to see those deer.

@Magicfish, I do feel very fortunate to have these deer around,

But the other wildlife in my yard is less pleasant,

I’m about to have to spend a fortune getting rid of a gopher infestation humanly.

So cute, yet so destructive…

We’ve got mostly squirrels where I live, tons of them! I like watching them and feeding them nuts. They love raw peanuts!

Awesome and thank you for using the emojis. I’m not a hunter so I love hearing these types of stories and kudos to you for finding a humane alternative for your gopher problem.

I’m glad the deer made it. My neighbor’s have a goat, but they moved him to the back of the property, so I can’t say hello on my walks (when I will be able to walk down the road again). Maybe they moved him, because they saw some lady talking to him from the road. :smirk::dark_sunglasses::goat:

My grandmother dislikes deer in her garden as they eat her plants.

I am not against hunting as there can be great reasons to do so but I love animals and they are precious and having them as your friends and loved ones and giving you joy to just see them and love them.

Nice for you that you still get to see them around.

I’m glad your wild animal neighbor is well. This is such a nice story. Hunting is necessary at times, but I don’t approve of people who do it for sport. Seems like a primitive pass-time.
