I don’t have a lot of driving experience. I am 29 years old but only had a car for a month, the transmission blew. I take the bus everywhere and it overwhelms me and limits me severely. But I I nervous to drive. I am getting disability so trying to figure out what to do with backpay when it comes. It’s either a car or a down payment on a house if I qualify.
A house is more important than a car generally. I have a friend who doesn’t have a car, he takes the bus to go to work. No problems. I just hate picking him up as he doesn’t have a car lol
I was going to say get a car, but if the choice is between a car and a house, i’d say go for the house. There is nothing more relieving than having your own place to live. You aren’t frightened that your landlord has decided to sell and that you need to move out and find somewhere else. You can always get a car in the future.
I haven’t driven because of no access to one. I want a house bad… but a car would be more liberating right now. My rent is cheap as dirt and my landlord just bought this house so I don’t see him selling. He also lives on the other side of the double and is extremely chill. I’m tired of using the bus and being assaulted on it or harassed or seeing people messed up on drugs and worrying about walking to and from stops.
My opinion is to get a car. Maybe get a cheaper one, and you can still save some of the backpay for a house, while continuing to save up.
I had to use the train and buses for a few years. That was a nightmare, especially when they were running behind, making me late. And lots of other problems, like what you mentioned.
I also developed paranoia about the train station. And it’s no fun waiting for a bus while it’s raining or snowing.
I just started taking the bus for my new job, as there is not always parking available.
Last time on the way back the bus wall full, and right behind me was a group of people yelling and swearing at each other
Absolute scum. I was just waiting to see if they got off at my stop, but luckily they did not.
I don’t know why some people have to be so loud and rude
But I’d get a car if you can afford to. Much more freedom, and if you use it enough, probably cheaper if you can sort out decent insurance at a fair price - but this may take a while if you have not driven much before
Is your backpay like $300,000 or something? You may afford a down payment on a house but how are you going to pay off the rest? Plus how would you pay yearly taxes on a house? IDK, around here a house starts at $300,000 unless you get a mobile home.
Everyone is saying house but I decided on a car. Mostly because I want to feel safer and being able to drive instead of riding the bus will help. My town is sketchy
