Computer purchase question

I have a Sony Vaio laptop I bought in 2003. Sony doesn’t make computers anymore so I am looking for a new one. A lot of them don’t have CDROMs or DVD players in them anymore. So I am wondering how you put Microsoft Office on them and how much it will cost me. I have Office. I have 2 versions on CDROM I have already bought but if the computer doesn’t have a disk drive I can’t put it on there.

I don’t need anything fancy and prefer 14 to 16 inch screen. I don’t play games or do graphic arts or anything like that What should I buy?

You can download Office, and then validate it using the code on your CD, most likely.

Ok thanks. I will try and see if someone at the store will help me pick one out. I still have Windows XP and it is becoming obsolete.

Get one with a cd/dvd player! Or just buy an external dvd usb player for $20 on amazon. They’re handy to have.

Yeah that sucks. XP is great.
Windows 7 is also pretty good, I recommend not getting one with windows 8.

Windows 10 is the latest. Windows XP is unsupported. WIndows 7 will be unsupported in 2020. Office 2016 is the latest. Office 2019 is coming out soon.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 with Windows 10. It has a DVD drive. Not a Sony but maybe I will like it. Came with a one year subscription to Office 365.

Good choice. I was looking at a Dell Inspiron 15 as well for my dad.

+1 to an external disc drive. That’s what I use.

Yeah you don’t need a DVD-ROM. If you’re buying a stationary you could have one for convenience, but on a laptop it’s a complete waste of space.

Well I already bought it.

The computer is talking to me and listening to my responses to set it up.

The initial setup when turning on the laptop for the first time takes a while but it will be the only time you do it. After the setup finishes, you’ll be good to go.

If you don’t have special needs get a cheap one on amazon.

Are you sure you need a dvd player and Microsft Office, did you try the free libreoffice?

I bought one already. My 2003 Windows XP computer still works though but it’s kind of slow. I will have to transfer all of my files to the new one when I get home.
