I keep get these pop ups that will not go away telling me that I have to buy protection for my computer. I would if I could, but I don’t have enough money in my banking account. I won’t be able to get to the bank until Wednesday to put money in my account. They haven’t offered me any place where I can tell them that. If I get the computer protection I won’t be able to buy shoes for a while, but the ones I got will last.
It’s a scam @crimby . You don’t need computer protection.
I use AVG. I regularly get told I need to do X,Y and Z for ‘ultimate protection’(or similar wording)
Do you use Windows? It has built in virus protection. As far as I know, it’s not necessary with third party protection software. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Avast is free to use. Just ignore any warnings to upgrade. Thats how they trick ya
I wouldn’t know. I’m shamefully incompetent with computers.
Its probably a scam. I use BitDefender free version.
It sounds like your computer has malware on it. They are telling you to download a computer protection so that you click on it and download a proper virus.
What you need to do is download a (true) virus scanner which will clean your computer.
Download MalwareBytes. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
Install it.
Run a scan.
You won’t need to pay for it (ignore when it asks you to upgrade).
But I bet you it will find some stuff.
Once you’re done I would run it in a few days time, and if your computer is clean then, you can remove the program, or just keep it for free.
Im not an expert in computers but I know a little and I definitely encourage you to download the free version of the program I linked.
There are lots of virus protection programs out there, but I really dont think you need to run one on a constant basis unless you are frequently downloading illegal software and going to shady websites.
BitDefender is also worth using if not malwarebytes.
I ve been to the naughty websites…
@crimby Those pop up ads are usually scams. Don’t purchase anything from pop ups and, in fact, don’t even click on pop ups if you can avoid it because these are often phishing attempts for hackers to get access to your computer or to your personal information.
Windows usually has built in protection, but since im paranoid i have a VPN and a avira anti virus just in case. But if i were you id just run a scan on it with malware bytes and ccleaner if your computer is a bit slow.
I agree with @StarCrazy. It sounds like malware or virus
Please don’t waste your money on any protection software. You probably have installed something on your computer that’s trying to get money off you. I have both windows and Mac and I have never paid for anything. There are free alternatives to everything.
Ugh. Your computer is infected. They’re trying to harrass you into providing financial info so they can drain your accounts, or steal your identity. Do NOT purchase these products.
Try downloading and running this first:
It should clean out the worst of it. Then download and install this and run it:
Download it and run the free version. Your system should get cleaned out between the two.
I can vouch for Malwarebytes, it’s the only thing I ever use or trust in these situations. Definitely don’t do anything the pop up is asking.
Usually in the past when I’ve gotten scams like this, there will be lots of obvious misspellings in the popups.
Adwcleaner is owned by them. It’s great for cleaning out active items that are operating in memory. Malwarebytes itself does a good deep clean of the hard drive.
I downloaded Avast. I paid for the $20.00 version. There is no doubt that I am badly infected. They’re harassing me bigtime. It makes me hate them.
I had a virus once. I hated the folks who put that together.
I recovered.
My sentiments exactly. They need to start setting up stings against internet con men and thieves. Let them cool their heels in prison for a couple of years.
