Coming Off Clozapine

Hi everyone

I’ve decided I’m going to ask my psychiatrist to take me off clozapine. I honestly don’t think I need it, as my SZ has always been mild.

Can anyone tell me what it is like coming off? How slowly should I do it? I currently take 650mg at night.

Thanks

You need to discuss this with your doctor. There’s no such thing as mild schizophrenia. Nobody here can advise you on tapering off meds. This is something only your doctor can do.

Every time I tried to stop taking clozapine without switching to something else I lost control. It was worse psychosis than before I started taking meds.

Yeah, I’ll talk with her next time I see her. As for “mild schizophrenia”, in my case there is dispute between doctors if I even have SZ. One thinks I’m a borderline, the other SZ. I’ve only had a few psychotic episodes, each under great stress.

So I’ll talk to my shrink next time I see her.

Thanks

When I came off clozapine I was immediately put onto risperdal instead and I landed up in hospital very sick. I heard clozapine is hard to come off so be careful and go with your doctors advice. But don’t come off cold turkey like I did. My pdoc at the time was not a good one. You need to come off gradually.

I would never stop my clozapine. Its the best antipsychotic out there according to studies.
