I play chess with my cousins I usually win against the older cousin but the younger cousin I lose against every time

I was playing with @labratmat I said checkmate and he was like how. Because of black and white arrangement.
I was shocked we should place the chess board in a specific way.
I played chess all my life and got to know about this last year.
