Okay, this is kind of random, but one thing that has begun to bug me as I got older is the term caveman.

To State the obvious, they did not all live in caves. They were hunter-gatherers, so were constantly on the move. Some left permanent markings in caves, some did not. That period of human evolution got somehow separated from who we really are.

They are not some strange species, but our ancestors

Indeed. It depends mostly on climate at the time. Some places (i.e., the middle of the desert) had no caves.
