Catch 22s in schizophrenia

There is a popular book in American literature called Catch 22.

It is about a recruit in the military that malingers as having MI to get out of service. It’s been awhile since I’ve read the book, but a Catch 22 is a situation where you are damned if you do or damned if you don’t.

It’s a little more complex than that, but there are some interesting Catch 22s in schizophrenia.

  1. If you have schizophrenia you can live untreated and suffer or take meds and suffer. A pure catch 22 is when both outcomes are the same, but only in treatment resistant cases is it a pure Catch 22. Otherwise it is a rock and a hard place situation of having mental illness or physical illness.

  2. if you say you are having symptoms you have insight but willl be treated, and if you don’t you have no insight and will be treated. Insight is sort of an irrelevant factor due to this catch 22. Whether you know you are sick or not has the same outcome.

  1. if you take meds or dont you are still disabled. Again, both opposing courses of action have same outcome, but this Catch22 is lost on people who think the meds eliminate disability.

  2. if you know you delusional and dont know you are you are still delusional. It’s true. Knowing something is a delusion does not mean you can think accurately.

  3. being voluntary patient still requires you to be released. Whether voluntary or not you are still locked in the hospital and have to be allowed to leave.

Sounds similar to a double bind…

The double bind as a stressor that exclusively causes sz is unlikely, but dissonance causing things in a confused and neurotic/ angsty person is probably a more complete combo.

Oh cool cool. I just meant they both have unwanted outcomes regardless lol.

I just listen to radio, only way to stay in that reality. Back in wu tang days that was funny rap, serious talk that was funny. Now its serious vibes mostly

I rejected your reality and substituted my own. I decided I would have an enjoyable life despite having SZ, and I have.

I have to check it out. I liked Kendrick Lamar and logic but most of the rap I hear people playing is just too far from where I want to go lol

I think i know what you mean about ego, thats what they are so serious about. Im a pro-ego guy, i like the selfish person who doesnt care about the community only what they need right now. Not that thats good but superegos are too moralistic

It varies in catch 22ness to rock and a hard placeness. If it is truly catch22 you are trapped, but rock and hard place you can get out of.

Yea …I can’t even remember the differences honestly… I just don’t like being dependant on status for my feeling of value. I agree that going for self is a healthy part of us but when that thing gets too big it can cause problems… seriously man…I know from experience!!!
