Can you resist tardive dyskinesia?

I used to occasionally stick my tongue out of my mouth and lick my upper lip, and I’ve noticed I’ve started doing it a lot more recently since changing antipsychotics. However, I can resist the movement and stop it if I want, so it’s not exactly involuntary. (Like, if I pay attention and decide I don’t want to do it, I can prevent it.)

Does this sound like tardive dyskinesia? I’ve read that TD is involuntary. Can you resist TD?

I have TD in my jaw and tongue. In the beginning, I couldn’t get to sleep very easily but I’ve learned to control it enough that I go right to sleep now. I had the same confusion but even if I do control it, I can only control it as long as I am able to concentrate on it. Once I lose my train of thought, it comes right back. I would definitely talk to a doctor about it. It sounds like TD to me. Mine can be resisted for a while but that’s the dx I was given.

Thanks for sharing. I’ll check with my doc about it!

Had always thought there was meds to help with it since the mid 90’s.
