Can pdocs lie about dx if they think it will harm you ? I think my pdoc gave me mood disorder because he thinks sz will make me worried. I obsess a little about having what I have anyway.
Yes they can.
I honestly think that my psychiatrist intentionally gave me a bipolar disorder diagnosis for the same reasons.
Also because it’s less stigmatizing then a schizoaffective diagnosis.
I don’t think it’s very ethical. He may be trying to make the ramifications of a diagnosis less severe.
I’m still gonna obsess on it. My partner said maybe that’s why he said mood disorder instead of being more specific. As it could be on my notes I obsess. But I would hate if he lied as they say I don’t have sz or sza and not to worry but the treatment is the same so they don’t care.
So what is your most recent diagnosis @anon80629714?
Welllllll I had an experience where they didn’t quite tell the truth; when I was first hospitalised they put me olanzapine for weight gain because I had an ed basically so I googled the medication and found out what it was for… they didn’t elaborate what it actually was when they gave me it
He just said mood disorder didn’t even specify which one but I think he meant bp.
When they are uncertain of the diagnosis, doctors will diagnose their patients with broad generic diagnoses like “mood disorder” instead of being specific.
He’s probably not sure which kind of dx you have, whether it’s bipolar or schizoaffective.
Is it not possible he said “mood disorder” implying schizoaffective disorder?
I dunno. Its hard to guess. I would say that you would like to know your actual diagnosis, or you would like to know when you can know
I asked about sz and sza but he said there’s no way I have those but I think he’s lied looking at my notes
Yeah you are right.
Schizoaffective would be under a schizophrenia type disorder.
I wouldn’t think a professional would make blatant lies. But it is weird that he wouldn’t be specific.
When I moved to talk about pip he started rushing so I decided not to bother asking more questions.
Hopefully you can get a document to talk about your mental illness from you MH team? Otherwise it will be really hard to apply for PIP.
Let me know how you get on with it. I got denied twice. Partially because I couldn’t get any medical team to support me in a letter.
Same I’ve been denied three times and this is attempt number 4. I don’t have my hopes up.
Doubt it. That would be professional misconduct. Licensed professionals are held to a higher standard when it comes to truthfulness. Sure there is the odd bad one, but I don’t think the professional ones will shine anyone on.
Let me take this back.
Doctors don’t usually lie but they may give you a less stigmatizing or harmful diagnosis if they are not sure.
I’ve never had a psychiatrist even hint of changing my diagnosis due to stigma.
I think most psychiatrists adhere to high ethical standards. That said, some psychiatrists are on the payroll (usually via symposia) of large pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer, to name a few. This is legal, but I think, at best, it gives the appearance of impropriety.
Also, I think psychiatrists should inform patients of FDA warnings on medications that they’re prescribing, especially a black box warning, which is the strictest labeling requirement that the FDA can mandate for prescription drugs.
All in all, I think the vast majority of psychiatrists tell the truth, but some do omit information from their patients.
You might have psychotic depression like me. I don’t meet the critetia for sz.
I don’t feel my depression is that bad to be honest I haven’t felt suicidal since my mid to late teens. I’m almost 36.
