Pit bulls are unpredictable. German Shepards bite the most people. Rottweilers could be a threat to kids because Rottweilers are sensitive to high pitched sounds, like kids sometimes make. I don’t like Dobermans. So if I was looking for guard dogs I just might try using Blue Heelers, but I don’t know enough about their temperament to know if I would want a couple guarding my house.
What about getting a golden retriever?
They’re not guard dogs, but they bark if someone is encroaching on your territory. I love that breed. They have a very warm personality.
Great Pyrenees? We have a user here with a dog of that breed and they love that dog
I don’t know. The way things are going now with the crime rate a person does need some kind of protection. No system is foolproof, and they might be able to get past your guard dog by giving them a sedative buried in hamburger meat, but that would be a lot of extra trouble. To tell you the truth, I doubt if I am ever going to have a house of my own, so I don’t know why I thinking about guarding one. I also think about tornado shelters a lot.
I hope you feel more secure in time
I had a blue heeler they are great dogs
On second thought I am going to get the biggest, baddest pitbull I can find.
Here’s my guard dog lol. Nah she’s good for barking. I have headphones in a lot so she lets me know when someone is at the door. I live in the hood but it’s not too bad. I’m not in a major city and live in a hud area so no one is trying to break in a bunch of poor peoples homes. Pit bulls are good deterrents though.
Never trust a dog with orange eyebrows.
Pit bulls are too aggressive for me. I would be wondering what this dog would do if it got loose. Would it attack a child? Pit bulls and Rottweilers scare me because of that.
Yeah. I have friend who’s dog was killed by a neighbor’s pit and some cats of my sisters neighbor. Ive also met loose pits that come up to you wanting some love. Idk
Yes, they can be some very affection dogs. It’s kind of a bargain: you get a lap dog and a guard dog in one package. I think it is when people raise them to be mean that they’re a danger to other people.
in my experience pit bulls are super affectionate and friendly, they are high energy and playful but can also be couch potatos and much more tolerant towards humans than other dogs, not even just in relation to ones in my experience but statistically documented, they used to be called nanny dogs. the problem is when people get one wanting a tough looking dog and either dont train it and keep them locked up in cages all day or they ingrain bad and aggressive behaviors intentionally. also every time a mixed breed dog attacks someone its usually stated as a pitbull, even tho there are like 4 breeds that ppl all call pitbulls (american pit bull terriers, american bully, Staffordshire bull terriers, and american Staffordshire terriers) each one is significantly different and hardly related in the origins of how each breed originated.
I know there work dogs and they would need something to do or they would tare up your house.
My pit bull is so friendly. My exes pit was super friendly too. They’re only as mean as you train them to be.
I had a blue heeler who passed away that was the sweetest dog
Currently I have a pitbull and he just wants to lie down with you and chill all day. Super friendly
Get a dog that is social, and not too high of energy.
If you want a guard dog, then get a wolf (joking), as big as possible to intimidate your neighbors.
Being bigger intimidates people, a large golden retriever or hound-like breed would work.
People are more likely to FAFO with small viscous dogs who are actually quick to attack.
Really the dogs you get are there for you, not to guard something.
My neighbor has a large lab or retriever (IDK breeds well) that is almost as big as her (smaller woman). She is a nice person, but if came to a aggressor confrontation, I am sure they would be more afraid of her, than her dog. She is ex-military and my money would on her in any confrontation.
Her dog is too friendly, she would protect him in a fight.
