I was a garbageman for a while… A job some people might look down on ( though I found that many people thought when they were kids, that it was the coolest thing ever to catch a ride on the back of the truck ). But it has it’s benefits though. I liked it best when we had to work a neigbourhood, that’s when you get to ride the back of the truck - which, indeed, is the coolest thing ever. Involves many little strolls to and from the bins or bags, nothing all that physical but added together you’d be in motion quite a bit throughout a day. You’d get plenty of fresh air.

I guess the prejudice is that its dirty or smelly. Don’t worry about that, you’ll get gloves most likely, and you’ll only be touching the bags and bins as you would when putting them outside yourself. No crawling through thrash is involved. Typical household thrash doesn’t even smell, really. When it’s sorted into green waste, that may stink at times if left for a while on hot days, but only for a moment before it disappears into the truck.

It made fairly good money as well, I recall 12/13 euros an hour on weekdays, but we’d get 20/h on a saturday and 25/h on a sunday. Not that there were that many weekendshifts but when I could get into one, it was a nice bonus for sure.

The con’s were that I’d had to wake up early at about 4:30 or so, and sometimes had to work 12h shifts, which can be long but also meant more money…

It involves a lot of heavy lifting, right? I’m not sure if everybody can do that. I considered being a garbage man before, it pays well here in the U.S. too. But I always used to see our garbage man lifting heavy bins of trash.

Perhaps call around to the different lawn services around you. sometimes you can work for cash under the table…painting walls in apartments might suit you too. You have to learn to paint though and I don’t know if you would consider this because of that.

Work for a powerwashing company and ask them to only pay you 10 dollars an hour. It’s pretty menial work

Sorry. I wanted to bookmark there on this thread. I’ll try to refrain from doing it again.

Well I guess the heavy lifting may differ a bit over different countries, or even within one… It didn’t involve much of that where I worked. The truck was equipped with an hydraulic lifting arm which did most of the work, I would just have to roll containers to and from that arm.
At times there were loose bags, those weren’t too heavy, but if there are many you’d have to bend over to pick them up a lot and that’s something you’d feel at the and of the day, in your back. But you’re right, some areas may have more of these bags or classical bins that won’t fit a lifting arm, such that it gets a bit more physical.

Many years ago, I looked into being a cross guurd for schoolchildren. I think if they assign you to a street that is not too busy , it wouldn’t be that bad. And surprisingly, it pays decent wages.

Cashier is a good job. I work as one at the Dollar Tree. It only pays minimum wage but it’s a nice job.

Yea I was thinking about being a cashier at Best Buy or Home Depot it’s kinda close to the 10$ range I was looking for.

@flybottle I hope your company provides those lifting belts you wear around your waist. Some companies these days just don’t care, so you may have to protect yourself.

I was a pizza delivery girl for about three years. It was fun. There was stress on the road, though, always some reckless car on the roads…

It was cool because I’d just work in the kitchen making pizzas with the dudes I was the only female driver and then at some point you get to toss your apron and run out the door. Driving could be either relaxing or stressing, depending on who you share the road with. It was kind of fun, though, like how fast can I deliver this pizza without violating the speed limit? I had fun finding short cuts and stuff.

One job that might be good is delivering pizza, if you have a good car. You don’t spend that much time in the store because you’re always going out on deliveries. You have to do some work inside the store, but not like at other fast food jobs. You have to take orders over the phone, but that isn’t hard. They pay you for your gas as well as your salary and tips. You don’t make a lot of money, but you do come out ahead of most other fast food jobs. They’re always looking for drivers. It’s easy to get a job there.
